"A terrible accident resulting in the death of Uncle John Wallace, an aged and well known farmer living three miles northeast of Weldon, occured last Saturday evening. Mr. Wallace and his wife had been at Weldon doing some trading, and were taking home a load of lumber. When within a half mile of home, the team which he was driving, a highspirited pair, became frightened and started to runaway. Before they had ran far Mrs. Wallace either jumped or was thrown out, one of the wheels of the heavy wagon passing over her ankle and breaking it. Mr. Wallace held on to the team and they continued their mad flight for a couple of hundred yards, when the wagon was overturned and he fell underneath the load of lumber, sustaining severe internal injuries. Help was soon at hand and Mr. and Mrs. Wallace taken to their home and medical assistance summoned. At first it was not thought that Mr. Wallace was fatally injured, but it soon developed that his internal injuries were very serious and despite the best of medical attention he passed away Tuesday morning at 3 o'clock. The deceased was one of the old settlers and most popular farmers of that country, and his sudden death is deeply deplored by a large circle of friends. Mrs. Wallace is suffering severely from her broken ankle, but is getting along as well as could be expected. The funeral of Mr. Wallace was held Wednesday afternoon from the family home."
