Gray died Sunday, aged 77 years and was buried Tuesday from the Presbyterian church. Glasco Sun, Dec. 17, 1897, page 3: James Milton Gray, so well and favorably known to people of Glasco and surrounding county, quietly passed away last Sabbath morning, Dec. 5th, at 11:10, at the home of his son Donald in this city, aged 77 years, 3 months and 17 days. While the bells of several churches were calling the people to the service of God's house, the gentle spirit of Father Gray ascended on high, to join the grander assembly and to take part in the service before God's throne. His was an honored and useful life in the church and in the several communities in which he spent his long life. Deceased was born near Jonesboro, Tenn. on the 18th day of August, 1820. He came with his parents to Illinois when twelve years of age; was converted at the age of twenty-one, while stopping for a short time in Clay county, Mo., and united with the Presbyterian church at Liberty, that state. On returning to Illinois he united by letter with the Presbyterian church at Indian Creek. He was married to Miss Margaret Coen, of Coles county, that state, on August 25, 1846, and who lived until April 17, 1888. All who knew Grandma Gray loved her dearly. In the spring of 1866 he moved to Johnson county, Kansas, and united by letter with the church known as the Lanesfield Presbyterian church. Here he was ordained a ruling elder and filled the office with honor and efficiency. Rev. John N. Rankin, now pastor of the Solomon City Presbyterian church, became pastor of the Lanesfield church in the spring of 1867 and Father Gray was always strongly attached to him. A letter received before the funeral, from him, expressed his regrets that he could not be present at the burial. He extended his sympathy to the bereaved ones, and referred to his good Christian life, and as being always true to his church. May 8, 1871 he homesteaded a quarter section of land four and one-half miles north of Glasco, and in the spring of 1872 settled with his family on the same. In the organization of the Presbyterian church of Glasco, his wife and two sons were among the original number. He served in this church as a useful and faithful elder until 1885 when he moved to Concordia, this state, and united with the Presbyterian church there. He and his wife returned again to Glasco and united with the church here March 1888. Too much cannot be said of his honest and upright life; his kindness to all, but especially to little children. He will be missed everywhere. He was an honorably discharged soldier, having served with distinction in Company I, 123rd Ill. vol. Inf. Wilder's Brigade. The G.A.R. Post of this place has lost its valuable chaplain -- he had been re-elected the day before his death out of respect to his long and faithful service in that office. His comrades knew he would never meet with them again. Peace to his memory. He leaves four sons and two daughters to mourn his departure. All were present at the funeral except one son who is in Colorado and a daughter in Oklahoma. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. B. F. McMillan, pastor of the Presbyterian church, assisted by Rev. Ilantel, of the Ev. Lutheran church. The large attendance at the funeral gave evidence of the high esteem in which our late brother and comrade was held. The burial was in Glasco cemetery on the 7th Inst. B.F.M.
