Following his return a little over a week ago from a visit with their son Wendell at Mesa, Arizona, Mr. Moss had spent four days in a Hastings hospital for treatment for a heart ailment. His condition had been improved since that time and he was up town last evening. A native of Iowa, Mr. Moss came to Nuckolls county (sic) with his parents at the age of three. He had been caretaker at the courthouse here for the past four years. Surviving are his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Rose Greenwood of Nelson, and a son Wendell. Funeral arrangements are as yet not completed. ===================== The Nelson Gazette, Thursday, December 23, 1948; pg. 4 John Milton Moss, son of Joshua H. and Lydia L. Moss, was born in Monroe County, Iowa, November 21, 1879, and passed away December 16, 1948, at his home in Nelson, Nebraska, at the age of 69 years and 26 days. He moved with his parents to Nelson, Nebraska, at the age of four years and grew to manhood on a farm northwest of town. He was converted and baptized at the age of twenty-one and united with the United Brethren Church north of Nelson. On September 11th, 1902, he was united in marriage to Anna E. Jackson. To this union were born three children--one daughter, Mrs. Rose Greenwood of Nelson; and two sons, Wendell Moss of Mesa, Arizona, and one son who died in infancy. All his life was spent in this vicinity with the exception of seven years which were spent near North Platte, where he was engaged in farming and stock raising. Since August 1944, he has been employed as custodian at the court house in Nelson. His father, mother, two brother and two sisters preceded him in death. Besides his wife and two children he leaves three granddaughters, Irene and Ann Greenwood and L. Ann Moss; also two brothers, W.H. Moss of Pauline, Nebraska, and J.E. Moss of Chicago, Illinois; two sisters, Elsie E. Shurtleff of Lincoln, and Ada M. Schufeldt of Hyannis, Nebraska; a number of nieces and nephews, and a host of friends to mourn his passing. He was a kind husband, a loving father, always thoughtful of others, and always ready to lend a helping hand wherever needed. Services were conducted at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock by the pastor, Rev. E.B. Stewart. The quartette sang two numbers. The Shepherds Psalm and It is His Will -- Mrs. W.L. Portwood, Mr. and Mrs. Jas. F. Murphy and J.E. Portwood with Mrs. H.H. Hite accompanying. The pallbearers were Earl Bowen, H.A. Brubaker, C.S. Brubaker, W.L. Willcox, John G. Imler and Paul E. Hattan.
