Description	:	PHIPPS, Johnny Paul 65, of Independence, Va., passed away Friday, October 31, 2003, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, N.C. Born January 16, 1938 at Independence, Va., he was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Ruby Kirk Phipps; his first wife, Doris Jean Phipps; and a brother, Edward Phipps. He was a retired Civil Engineer with American Electric Power Company. Surviving are his wife, Susie A. Phipps of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas E. Nine grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral service will be conducted Monday, November 3, 2003 at 3 p.m. in Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel, Independence, with the Rev. Randy Morris and the Rev. Jeff Harris officiating. Interment in Bridle Creek Cemetery. Masonic rites will be conducted by Independence Masonic Lodge #129 A.F. & A.M. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday night from 6 to 8 p.m. Flowers are appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to Independence Rescue Squad, P.O.
