SHANNON DIES NEAR KEENE Played Role of Agent for Underground Railroad During Civil War - Funeral Tuesday - John P. Shannon, famous during Civil War days as the Coshocton co. agent for the underground railroad by which slaves were transported from the south to the points of safety in the north, died at his home four miles north of Keene Friday night about 7 o'clock after a sudden breakdown from the infirmities of old age. He was 81 years old and is survived by a wife and one son, Nathan Shannon, who lives near Keene. Mr. Shannon was a remarkable man in many respects. His home was famous as the underground railroad station. He was the last of the old pioneers who settled in that vicinity. He lived an honest, straightforward life and few men were more rich in friends. He followed the teachings of the United Presbyterian faith and was for many years a member of the Amity Church near Fresno. The funeral services will be conducted at the late home Tuesday morning by Rev. McCrea of Fresno. Interment will be made Tuesday afternoon at South Lawn cemetery in Coshocton. Coshocton Dailey Age - Saturday, 23 Oct. 1909 ------------------------------------------ JOHN P SHANNON JOINS FATHERS John P Shannon, one of the oldest residents of this county, died at his home three miles northwest of Keene at midnight. Mr. Shannon's death has been hourly expected for days. He leaves a wife, one son, Nathan R, who lives within a short distance from his father's home, and a score of relatives and many friends. Mr. Shannon, son of Nathan Shannon, was born in Millcreek tp. in 1825 and his life was passed almost wholly in this county. He was a well to do farmer who was respected by everyone who had an occasion to deal with him. A member of the Presbyterian Church of Keene since a boy, he was active in church work. Funeral services will be held at the house at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning in charge of Rev. Mr. McCrea of Fresno. Interment in South Lawn Cemetery in Coshocton.
