John Russell Barker, for about forty-nine years a resident of Villisca and community, died Monday afternoon at 12:15 from a complication of diseases, after an illness of several days, at the Mrs. P. A. Shires home on First Street and Fourth Avenue. Mr. and Mrs. Barker had been making their home there for about two weeks, their household effects having been sent to California, where they had planned to make their home in hopes of benefitting their health. The deceased was born November 18, 1943 at Great Barrington, Massachusetts. When one years of age he went to Ft. Atkinson, Wisconsin with his parents. There he spent the next nineteen years of his life. When twenty years of age he went to Howard County, this state, and for two years claimed that as his home. While there he was married to Miss Katie Taylor, who he had known at Ft. Atkinson. After two years in Howard County, he returned to the Wisconsin City and assumed the position of superintendent of the Northwestern Furniture Shops for a few years. The family then moved to a farm eleven miles north of Villisca and had since that time made their home in this section of the state. For years they have lived in Villisca. The wife and one son, D. R. Barker, survive the deceased.
