Barker, one of the earliest settlers of Montgomery County, passed at his home here Saturday morning, January 20, after short illness from cerebral hemorrhage. The funeral services were held at the family home at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, Rev. W. J. Ewing, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, of which Mr. Barker was a member, preaching the funeral sermon. The funeral services were held at the family home at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, Rev. W. J. Ewing, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, of which Mr. Barker was a member, preaching the funeral sermon. Mr. Barker was in his 74th year. He was born in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, March 17, 1832, but moved to Wisconsin with his parents while he was a small boy. He returned to Massachusetts ad worked for a time in wollen mills. Later he worked at Quincy, Illinois, New Orleans, LA, and in Howard County, this state. When the Burlington Railroad was built through this section, he worked with the construction force. He settled on a farm near here in 1870, moving from the farm to Villisca in 1898. He was married to Mary Taylor in Howard County, April 9, 1866. Mrs. Barker dying here in 1908. Three children, Dr. Fred J. Barker of Clarinda, W. A. Barker, and Miss Frankie Barker of Villisca, survive. John R. Barker, of Villisca, was a brother of the deceased. Mr. Barker was a popular man and is widely mourned. He died January 20, 1912 in Villisca, Montgomery County, Iowa of a cerebral hemorrhage, W. A. Lomas, M.D., burial January 22, 1912 in the Villisca Cemetery, U.S. Raynor, undertaker, Villisca.
