Funke, well known farmer east of Tipton, died at the family home Thursday evening at 7:45 0'clock, following an illness that has lasted for several months. Mr. Funke's death had been expected for several days, his illness having assumed a very critical nature for the past week or ten days. Death was due to blood poisoning caused by an infection, following a skin abrasion. He had been in a stupor since Wednesday. He was a devout member of St. John's Catholic church and funeral services will be held there Monday morning. The death of Mr. Funke brings to a close a marital union extending over a period of sixty-two years. He and Mrs. Funke had been married longer than any couple residing in the county, their marriage taking place April 18, 1861. Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Sells southwest of the city were married in the same year but in October. The death of Mr. Sells occurred May 7th. The deceased was a native of Germany, coming to this country when eleven years of age. He had the perseverance and industriousness of his race to a marked degree and was able to become one of the prosperous farmers of the community. He bought a farm when he came to this county in 1880 and by hard work and ecomonics increased his holdings to 360 acres of some of the best farm land in the county, all well improved. The deceased moved here with his family from Decatur county where they had moved from Franklin county. He was born in Germany in 1838 and came to this country in 1849 with his parents, the family locating in Franklin county where he grew to manhood. April 18, 1861 he was united in marriage to Miss Josephine Weldass, the wedding taking place at Oldenburg in Franklin county. After a few years residence there they moved to Decatur county and later to this county. Eleven children were born to them, five of whom, with their mother, are left to mourn his loss. The children are Mrs. Herman(Rebecca) Koors, Theodore Funke and Henry Funke near Tipton. Mrs. Jacob (Lucy) Idlewine and Mrs. Anna (David) Hardebeck of Elwood. The deceased children are Mary Eder, Elizabeth, Josephine, John and Rosa. He is survived by 29 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs.Rebecca Hardebeck of Milhousen. He was progressive and with hard work and perseverance he improved the farm land which he had acquired making it one of the ideal farms in the community. Up until the last few months he had been in his usual health and he and his wife were faithful attendants at church services. He was a good friend and neighbor and will be missed in his community and over the county. Mr. Funke was regarded as one of the best farmers in the county and during his years of residence in this county he acquired a large land acreage east of the city. Many farmers in Tipton county grow what is known as "Funke's Yellow Dent" corn, it being a variety introduced here by Mr. Funke and which is regarded as a most excellent quality. The ear is not so large as the standard Yellow Dent, but the grain is exceedingly flinty, and the variety has come to be very popular, as it usually matures well, even though planted late in the season, Mr. Funke always being accustomed to putting his corn in after most people in the county had completed their planting. Died May 10, 1923 at 7:30 p.m.
