Culler is a resident of the Valley Road Nursing Home in Damascus, and was honored with a party hosted at the nursing home by his family and friends. John was born in New Waterford on March 27, 1890, the son of Walter Culler and Harriett Metz Culler. He has spent most of his life in Columbiana County. He was employed for many years as a stationary engineer at the Salem China Co., where he retired in 1955. He was married to the former Bertha Sommers, who died October 5, 1975. Three of his children joined John Tuesday to celebrate his birthday. Attending were his daughters, Mabel Garlock of North Canton and Vera Bush of Salem, and a son Harold Culler of Salem. Another son, John Culler Jr. of Mechanicstown was not able to attend. John's five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren also attended the party. Although he is no longer able to be outdoors and enjoy his hobbies, John's favorite pastimes are fishing and woodworking, according to his family members. When he was 75 years old, he made grandfather clocks for his grandchildren. The clocks were unusual because all working parts are made of wood. The octogenarian has put in more than 200 hours of work on the unusual timepiece and said it will take two or three months more of work to complete it. Culler has done woodworking extensively since he retired 15 years ago from the Salem China Co. He makes donkey carts, windmills and other yard decorations. He has shipped articles to many states. The jovial 80-year-old retired potter and steam engineer has made his own table saw and band saw for his heated workshop in his garage. Pops, who has spent all his life in the Salem area, worked for the Salem China Co. and the Electric Furnace Co. After he retired he and his wife, Bertha Luellen, moved to their present home in Hanoverton on Cemetery Road. Pops' clock has no nails or screws and the pendulum is weighted with a croquet ball. Culler sent away for the pattern for the clock but said it wasn't complete and he has had to rely on his own ingenuity. When the timepiece is finished he plans to put it in a grandfather's clock cabinet with glass sides so the wooden works are visible. Culler Sr., 100 of 451 Valley Road died today at 8:30 a.m. at the Valley Road Nursing Home following a long illness. Born March 27, 1890 in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Walter and Hattie(Metz) Culler. Mr. Culler was employed as a station engineer at Salem China Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1955. Prior to that he was employed as a station engineer for Demings and American Laundry. He was preceded in death Oct. 5, 1975 by his wife, Bertha L. Sommers Culler, whom he married Dec 12, 1911. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Ray (Vera) Bush of Salem and Mrs. Ivan(Mabel)Garlock of North Canton;two sons, John W. Culler Jr. of Mechanicstown and Harold Culler of Salem, Five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter Mary Martha Culler; a son, Lester Paul Culler and a sister Mary Haas. Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Stark Memorial in Salem with the Rev. Jack Austin of the First Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in Home Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
