The father and step-mother did live in Kentucky per their own obituary information, but it is possible that the father and birth mother did actually live in Indiana for a time. Family researchers should be aware of both locations - any clarification would be appreciated. Husband of Fannie Cowles Herman, married May 24, 1892 in Fairfield, Jefferson county, Iowa, per marriage records. It should be noted that the marriage record listed the name of his mother as "Katie Palmer Herman"; likely the recording clerk did not know that she was not the biological mother. The same marriage record indicated that this was John's second marriage, but to whom and when that first marriage took place was not noted. The DOD for this memorial is being corrected a/o June 13, 2016. A previous Evergreen cemetery transcription project had listed the DOD as being June 4, 1908, but that date now appears to be the burial date, not date of death. According to the obituary, John W. Herman died on a Wednesday, which in this case would be June 3, 1908. ----------------- Fairfield Journal June 5, 1908 Pg. 3 Col. 2 J. W. HERMAN DEAD. John W. Herman, a well known reinent (sic) of this city passed away Wednesday at the hospital in Ottumwa after a short illness. The remains were brought to this city yesterday afternoon and interred in Evergreen cemetery. Mr. Herman left this city only a few weeks ago for Ottumwa where he entered the hospital to take treatment for cancer of the liver. He grew steadily weaker and succumb (sic) to the disease Wednesday. Mr. Herman is survived by one son whose home is in Kansas. Mr. Herman's wife preceded him in death some years ago. He was a quiet unassuming man and one who was well liked by all his acquaintances. During his residence here he was employed in the C. A. Woelhaf restaurant. ------------------ Note: John was buried beside his father and step-mother. Although not provided a full headstone, there is a small cement slab in place, buried in the ground, which appears to be the base for some sort of a footstone. It is possible that a more substantial footstone/headstone was originally put in place, but got damaged during mowing seasons and subsequently lost or removed.
