Pallbearers were O.C. Hauge, Charles Caughren, Christ Haugen, T.L. Christianson, J.W. Schucha and Allen P. Gradin. John W. Nelson was a sailor in his youth, a graduate of a navigation school, who carried his love of the sea into the love of the prairies. A native of Norway, he was born Sept. 21, 1858, in Drammen, son of Peter and Patrea Marie (Fect) Nelson. Married Sept. 5, 1881, in Chicago to Karen Anderson, they lived in Chicago until 1885, when they went to the Valley City area in North Dakota, pioneering. There they remained 13 years and all except the youngest of their children being born there. In 1891 they returned to Chicago, living there nine years, and then in 1907 went to Wisconsin, where Mr. Nelson farmed. Upon his retirement from farming in 1917, he came to Kremlin to live. He died March 9 in a Havre hospital, where he had been brought about three weeks before. Surviving are the following: His wife, Mrs. Karen Nelson, 85, of Kremlin; and the children, Mrs. J.C. Aagerbeck of Chrystal Lake, Ill.; Hilda and Sigurd Nelson of Kremlin; Albert of St. Marie's, Idaho; Helen Nelson of Chicago, Ill.; and Mrs. Frank Elwell of Havre; two grandchildren, Jens Aagerbeck and Donald Elwell. His grandson, Jens, is a graduate of St. Olaf College, is a lieutenant in the marine flying corps in California, where he has been for four years.
