John W. Long was born on a farm near Clarinda, Iowa, on August 12, 1863, and came to Sherman County, locating in Loup City. He was 68 years and 3 months old at the time of his death. He arrived in Loup City May 24, 1887 and from that date on to the time of his death, he was an enthusiastic booster for Sherman County. When he arrived here he engaged in the real estate business and studied law. He was soon admitted to the bar and began practice of law. The practice of law, however, did not appeal to him so much. This was partly due to his sympathetic makeup. When Mr. Long took a case he felt that he was defending or prosecuting justice and to lose a case which he felt he should not dampened his ardor. Those who heard him argue a case in court say that he was eloquent and made convincing arguments. He was elected County Attorney in November 1896, and made a splendid record, defending the best interests of the county at all times. He refused to serve more than one term and after his term expired he gradually retired from the law business and devoted all his time to real estate. Mr. Long sold and re-sold more real estate in Sherman County than any one person. Part of his time was also devoted to Insurance and later he was a stockholder and president of the Loup City State Bank. Mr. Long was a member of numerous lodges. The M. W. A. and the A. O. U. W. were some of the early organizations he joined. The Knights of Pythias lodge was one of his favorites and he was elevated to the highest positions in the state in that organization, that of Grand Chancellor Commander. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Eastern Star. In the Masonic order he was affiliated with some of the higher degrees, that of The Scottish Rite and the Shrine. He was also a member of the I. O. O. F. The greatest comfort and satisfaction Mr. Long had the past 20 years was that of his "boys". He was a friend of every boy in the community and he spent time, money and effort along that line. ...(more about "boys") Politically he was a Democrat, but when his party failed to take the proper stand on moral questions he voted for the party that came closest to his belief. He was an ardent supporter of the prohibition cause. In city and county affairs he voted for the man who came the nearest representing his ideals. (praise) Mr. Longs [sic] health began to fail about two years ago and the past year he was confined to his bed at intervals. The last time he came down town we are told, was when Loup City and St. Paul played foot ball on Oct. 28, a game he rarely missed. From that time on he was confined to his bed and passed away Thursday morning November 12, with his immediate relatives near his bedside. He realized that he was soon to go and expressed himself as ready to meet his Christ. Mr. Long was united in marriage to Zella W. Rawson on April 5, 1899 in Loup City. Two children were born to them, John R. and Margaret Lumley, both of Loup City, who survive their father. A sister, Miss Ella Long of Loup City, also survives her brother. Miss Long is the only remaining member living, his brothers having passed to the beyond a number of years ago. Mrs. Long passed away Jan. 31, 1910. The Sherman County Times - Nov 20 1931
