Trooper R. S. Edwards identified the victim as John Wayne Hayes, 15, of Plain View. Trooper Edward said the accident occurred about 5:55 p.m. at the intersection of Routes 14 and 605. Police said the boy apparently rode his bicycle out of Route 605 into Route 14 in front of a southbound automobile driven by James Richard Hairfield of Richmond. The driver was quoted as saying that he swerved to the left in an effort to avoid striking the boy but could not avoid it. The boy's body struck the hood and the windshield of the automobile, shattered the glass and bent the top of the automobile. The driver was charged with involuntary manslaughter and a preliminary hearing is set for August 5 in the King and Queen County court. The boys survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Otis Wade Haynes of Plain View, his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Hattie W. Haynes of Glenns; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Chandler of Plain View and a brother, Thomas Allen Haynes, also of Plain View. The body was at the Vincent Funeral Home in West Point Friday night. Funeral arrangements were incomplete.
