McDonald and Ellen Mayers OBITUARY THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT Chariton, Iowa Thursday, January 13, 1944 JOHN WILLIAM McDONALD John William McDonald, son of Frank and Ellen McDonald, was born Aug. 11, 1884 in Lucas county, Iowa, and departed this life January 2, 1944, at the age of 58 years, 4 months and 22 days. He had spent his entire life in Pleasant township. He was united in marriage to Lesta May Umbenhower on Jan. 18, 1910. To this union six children were born, four of whom are living. They are: Mrs. Atha Miller, who lived with him; Everett, of near Columbia; Asa, of Des Moines; and Geneva, of Chariton. Two sons preceded him in death, Harry and Gerald, also his father and mother and two sisters. Besides the bereaved children he is survived by five brothers, Alfred, of Normal, Ill.; George, of Lucas; Charles, of Russell; Tom, of Chariton; Francis, of Williamson; and three sisters, Mrs. Ruth Jures, of Maywood, Ill.; Mrs. Anna Baylor, of Bloomington, Ill.; and Mrs. Olive Peterson, of Chariton. He is also survived by an uncle, Wm. Mayers, of Chariton; nine grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends and neighbors who will miss him from their midst. He accepted Christ as his personal Savior at the Pilgrim church in Des Moines and took membership with the Coal Glen church. Funeral services were held at the Coal Glen church at 2:30, Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. A. E. Beals, of Russell, and burial was in the Coal Glen cemetery. Obituary courtesy of Charles M.
