O'Bryan, familiarly known to everyone in the community as "Uncle Joe" passed away at his home here last Thursday evening just shortly before seven o'clock, March 9, 1933, at the age of 77 years, 3 months and 25 days, after an illness of considerable duration, his condition being especially critical during the past two or three weeks. Joe B. O'Bryan was born in Bargetown [sic], Kentucky, November 12, 1855. He was married there to Miss Henrietta Spaulding, September 12, 1878, and to this union were born five children, Dick, John, Harvey, Gladys and Martin, or Bud, as he is known by everyone, John, the second son, preceded his father in death December 2, 1915. His wife departed this life seven years ago, on April 24, 1926, at their home in Loup City. Uncle Joe was a pioneer railroad engineer, have piloted the first train into Loup City over the Union Pacific railroad in the year 1885. Mr. and Mrs. O'Bryan made Loup City their home for several years following, later being transferred to other runs, including out of Omaha, Ord to Spaulding, Nebraska. One feature of his railroad life was while he was engineer on the Ord branch. He was piloting his train to Ord one evening when he and his fireman saw an old-fashioned Nebraska tornado zig-zagging across the prairie toward the train. Seeing the storm was sure to strike the train, Uncle Joe used his head. While the storm did strike the train, overturning three of the coaches, he had succeeded in stopping his iron horse before the storm struck. While a number of his passengers were considerably bruised, no one was seriously injured. Both passengers and the railroad officials attributed this fact, and the slight damage to the train, to the presence of mind of the engineer J. B. O'Bryan. Engineer O'Bryan was retired by the company on a pension in the fall of 1914. His family had learned to love Loup City and almost immediately upon his retirement from active duty, he moved his family to this city, where they have since made their home. Since the death of Mrs. O'Bryan seven years ago Uncle Joe has maintained his home here, where his many friends kept him from getting lonesome at all times. He was known and loved by the community and numbered by the thousands. They came from the entire state to pay their last respects at his funeral Sunday afternoon. Something over five years ago Uncle Joe was taken seriously ill. He spent several weeks at St. Francis Hospital at Grand Island where it became necessary to amputate his left lower limb just below the hip after infection had set in. After returning to Loup City he then stayed at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. A. Thompson nine weeks, then again took up his residence at his own home. ...(much praise)... Though it had been known for several days that his condition was serious, still his children and his friends had his hope for his recovery. He died peacefully just before seven o'clock in the evening after having spent his best day in weeks. Funeral services were held from St. Josaphat's Catholic church at Loup City, Sunday afternoon, March 12, at three o'clock, in charge of Rev. Al Szczerkowski, pastor of the church. His granddaughter, Miss Jean Thompson, sang two beautiful solos during the last services, which were attended by his friends from far and near as well as locally, and all his near relatives except his son Bud of California, and his grandson Dick Thompson of Goodland, Kansas, who were unable to come. He was laid to rest beside the body of his devoted wife in Evergreen cemetery. Pall bearers were Jack McGhghy, J. C. Grow, O. L. Swanson, F. S. Janulewicz, Henry Johansen and Lawrence Lofholm. He is survived by his four children and eleven grand children besides a host of friends who are left to mourn his departure. He has lived his life well and enjoyably and has left his mark in the community of his choice. Those from a distance who attended the last rites were: Mr. and Mrs. Dick O'Bryan, and son Dick, and Mrs. Lou Beindorff, of Omaha, Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Vandenberg, Mr. and Mrs. Chris. Weber, Mr. and Mrs. Barclay Jones and Harry Riley all of Spaulding. The latter two gentlemen are also retired Union Pacific engineers. Mrs. Dorothy Marshall of David City, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Costello, Mrs. Mike Mulick, Dan Cronin, Mr. and Mrs. Charley Houser and daughter, Mr.and Mrs. Copps, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Alstrand, Mr. and Mrs. Nichols and Mr. and Mrs. Berbrick, all of Grand Island, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hinman, Mr. and Mrs. Ferd Thompson and J. S. Clark of Ravenna, Mr. and Mr. Edward Kokes and some friends of Ord, Chester Chinn of North Loup, Mr. and Mrs. Jonh O'Niell and son, and daughter, the Misses Margeret and Marceline Burghardt and Mrs. Lizzie Goodwin, all of St. Libory.
