Read More	Daily Independent Journal Monday, December 24, 1973 Joseph Glynn Alvarez, who led an unsuccessful campaign to get a kidney treatment center in Marin after his wife died of kidney disease, died yesterday in a Burlingame hospital after a long illness. He was 67. His first wife, Dorothy, died in September 1970, 2 years after thousands of dollars were raised in Marin to help pay $11,000 for a kidney machine and admission to a treatment center in san Francisco. He vowed then he would work to get a kidney center in Marin "until I die. I made a promise to my wife before she died." Marin hospital officials, however, decided there was too little need for such a unit to warrant its cost, especially since treatment was available in San Francisco. A native of Puerto Rico, Alvarez came to the U.S. in 1924. He worked as a jewelry designer at New York stores, including Tiffany's, before moving to California. He operated a jewelry store in San Francisco for many years. He lived in Marin from 1955 until last year, when he moved to Burlingame. In Marin, he lived in Greenbrae and San Anselmo. Alvarez was a leader of the Marin unit of the Kidney Foundation of Northern California, a prime mover of the annual car show at Strawberry to raise funds for the foundation, and a member of the Marin Independent Order of Foresters, Court 1950, and the Buen Vecino Club of San Francisco. He is survived by his wife Carmen; 7 children; Joseph Alvarez of Puerto Rico; Anthony Alvarez and Thelma Johnston, both of Santa Ana, Orange County; Violet Johnston of Fremont; Charles Alvarez and Margarita Alvarez, both of Fairfax; and Robert Alvarez of Pleasant Hill; a brother, Joaquin Alvarez; a sister, Carmen Alvarez of Puerto Rico; and many grandchildren. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. Dunstan's Catholic Church, Millbrae. Burial will be in Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery.
