Mr Spires died unexpectedly at a Kearney filling station Thursday, Nov. 12. He had just returned from visiting his wife, Ellen, who is in an Omaha hospital. Funeral services were in Kearney with the members of the Masonic Lodge in charge.... Mr Spires died unexpectedly at a Kearney filling station Thursday, Nov. 12. He had just returned from visiting his wife, Ellen, who is in an Omaha hospital. Funeral services were in Kearney with the members of the Masonic Lodge in charge. Graveside rites were at the cemetery. Mr Spires, a World War I veteran, was born and educated at Clarks and had been employed as a Central City druggist and manager of the Kearney Skaggs Grocery Store. At the time of his death he was a guard at the Boys' Reformatory in Kearney. He was a member of the Methodist Church, the Elks and the Masons. Surviving, besides his wife, are two brothers, Bob of Clarks and Clyde of El Dorado, Kan.; and one sister, Mrs Ada Church of Clarks. He was a brother-in-law of Robert, Walter and Albert Nelson and Mrs Elmer Hanquist all of Polk. Attending the Joe Spires funeral Monday in Kearney from Clarks were Mr and Mrs Robert Spires Sr. Frank and Dennis, Mr and Mrs Corkey Hansher, Mr and Mrs Dorsey Church and Mr and Mrs Burdette Church, Mrs Frank Schuele of Columbus, Mr and Mrs Clyde Spires and children of El Dorado, Kansas, Mr and Mrs Leonard McIntire of Grand Island. Mr and Mrs Robert Spires Jr. of Exeter and Mrs and Mrs Richard Johnson attended graveside services at Polk. 1959: Polk, Nebraska "The Polk Progress" newspaper dated 19 November 1959 shows; "Joe Spires, 64, Dies Suddenly at Kearney" "Graveside services were held Monday afternoon at the Lindale cemetery near Polk, for a native of Clarks, Joe Spires, 64, who died unexpectedly in Kearney Thursday. The Masonic Lodge at Kearney conducted memborial services in that city before the body was taken to Lindale cemetery. Mr. Spires, guard at the Nebraska Boys Industrial School, Kearney, was returning to the school from Omaha where he had been to visit his wife Ellen, who underwent surgery at an Omaha hospital. He suffered a heart attack and died at a service station in Kearney where he had stopped for gasoline. He was born and grew to manhood at Clarks. After serving as a druggist at Central City and Kearney he was also a Skaggs manager for many years. Surviving besides his wife, are one sister, Mrs. Ada Church of Clarks, and 3 brothers, Robert, Clarks, and Clyde all of Eldorado, Kans.
