Nance County Journal - July 18, 1963 ROBERT SPIRES DIES Robert Spires Sr. 75, a retired Clarks farmer, died Monday at his home following a heart attack. He was a brother of the late Fred Spires of Fullerton, and was an uncle of Mrs. Earl Gilson of Fullerton. 1963: Clarks, Nebraska newspaper The Clarks News dated Thursday 25 July 1963 shows; ROBERT SPIRES - Robert Spires was born June 5, 1891, the son of Fredric Spires and Sara Elizabeth Pentaloy (per Spencer P Spires the spelling Pentaloy should be Pentelow) Spires. Mr. Spires passed away July 15, 1963 at the family home at Clarks, due to a coronary attack, at the age of 72 years. Mr. Spires was born and raised at Clarks, Nebraska, Merrick County. He and Nanetta Isabelle Ernst were married Febr. 3, 1924, and to this union were born eight children, five boys and three girls. Mr. Spires had been a farmer until his retirement in 1952 in which he and his wife moved into their present home. Mr. Spires was a veteran of World War I, having been in active duty and overseas 18 months. He was a member of World War I Barracks No. 2471. Survivors include his wife, sons, Robert Jr. of Exeter, Richard of North Platte, Franklin of Stromsburg, Thomas of Clarks, and Dennis in the U. S. Navy stationed at Seattle, Washington; daughters, Imogene (Mrs. Rolland Abbott) of Nebraska City, Eileen (Mrs. Corbett Hansher) of Clarks and Beverly (Mrs. Frank Schuele) of Columbus; sixteen grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Dorsie Church of Clarks; one brother, Clyde, of Eldorado, Kansas and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were held July 18, 1963 at the Clarks Methodist Church at 10 a.m.,with the Rev. Clyde Wells officiating. Interment was in the Clarks Cemetery with Military rites. Pallbearers were Ray Stern, Clyde Mustard, William Pickrel, Leo Kelly, Art Wiser Sr. and James Booth, Jr. Singers were Mrs. Jack Wilson, Miss Evelyn Fosbury and Mrs. Art Schlondorf, with Mrs Gerald Schott as organist. Hymns were "In the Garden" and "Beyond the Sunset."
