Deakyne has been in the army for 17 weeks. 6/1/1944 TT Returns to Camp. First Lieut. and Mrs.. James B. Deakyne have returned to St. Paul, Minn. after spending a fifteen day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Losie Deakyne of South East Street. Lt. Deakyne returned recently from overseas duty, and was promoted to First Lieut. He is in the railroad, transportation division and is now training men for overseas duty. Mr. a n d Mrs. Deakyne have another son, Joe, in the service, who is now located at Camp Hood, Tex. Lt. Deakyne's address is O-1110451, Co. O 735 Rwy. Opng. Bn., Ft. Snelling, Minn. 12/44 TT DEAKYNES HEAR FROM SON Mr. and Mrs. Losie Deakyne recently received a telegram from their son, First Lieut. James Deakyne, saying he had just received word of the birth of his son who was born Oct. 19. Lieut. Deakyne is now in Belgium. His brother, Joe Deakyne, is in Germany. They were stationed very close to one. Another in Belgium at one time, but did not get to see each other. Anyone wishing their addresses may obtain them from Mr. and Mrs. Deakyne. 5/3/45 TT PVT. DEAKYNE HOME AFTER PRISON RELEASE Pvt. Joseph L. Deakyne, 24,. son of Mr. and Mrs. Losey Deakyne, South East street, is on a 60 day furlough after being liberated from a prison camp in western Germany. He is now in Kokomo with his wife, Mrs. Kathryn Deakyne, snd daughters. Pvt. Deakyne lost 40 pounds during his stay in prison but had regained most of it, his mother said. It says that one year ago today Joe Deakyne was liberated from the German, prison camp by Gen. Patton's army and was the first Tipton prisoner to be liberated. He was captured during the Battle of the Bulge. . 5/4/45 Tipton Tribune Home from Nazi Prison Camp, Joe Deakyne Tells of Capture Private Joe Deakyne, formerly of Tipton, is the subject of an interview in Kokomo where he has gone following his release from a German prison camp and his return to this county. He is the first Tipton man to return from a prison camp. Joe was an infantry soldier, a "doughboy", and he has that pride of the infantryman who knows that it is men like himself who do the job. There came a day in December in Luxembourg when Joe along with his platoon, was trapped by tanks of the Von Rundstedt Panzer divisions. "We were hopelessly pinned down" Joe said. "We held out as long as we could, but you can't fight tanks with bayonets, so we stepped out with our hands up". We hiked for three or four days," he said, "and they gave one ration of bread a day. It was cold and we were getting weak from hunger. The hike made us want more food, which wasn't forthcoming. Then we were herded in freight cars on a railroad, packed 75 to 80 men in a car, and then locked in." "We were on that train for three days, locked in all the time. We got no food or water, and we became famished for water. Once or twice, when stopped in some station, we could get some civilian to get us a little water and that helped a lot. On the last day we got a ration of black bread. Then the trained stopped and we were hiked to the prison camp outside of Bad Orb". "The food was bad," he said "consisting of a soup made of beet tops with now and then a potato tossed in. Bread was rationed one loaf to seven or eight men and sometimes for a treat we got a little chunk of something like margarine. Everybody lost weight. I lost almost 40 pounds." The miracle came one day when the roar of guns in the village a short distance away. There was a sharp fight around the village and then it stopped. A short time later there came the roar and clank of tanks and the prisoners screamed with joy as an American tank crashed the front gate of the prison and roared into the center of the compound with guns commanding the guardhouse." "After a check-up were taken to France and there we got our first square meal. They split us up, according to our home locations and finally came the day we got aboard a boat and sailed for home." 09/19/1997 Tipton Tribune Joseph L. Deakyne Joseph L. Deakyne, 77, 311 South Conde Street, Tipton, died Thursday at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Born April 14th, 1920 in Tipton, he was the son of Losey and Bessie (Renner) Deakyne. He married Kathryn Martin on July 19th, 1940, and she survives. He retired in 1975 from Delco Remy in Anderson and was a sign painter. He belonged to West Street Christian Church, Moose, and Elks lodges, the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. A veteran of World War 2, he served in the U.S. Army and was a prisoner of war in Stalag 9B in Bad Orb, Germany. Surviving with his wife, are a son, Larry Deakyne of Cool California; tow daughters, Judith Hicks of Tipton, and Pamela Jones of VanBuren; a brother Jimmie Deakyne of Cicero; nine grandchildren, two step-grand children, 13 great grand-children and one step-great grandchild. Funeral services were be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Young-Nichols funeral home. The Reverend Norris Webster will officiate and burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m Saturday. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. Spetember 18th, 1997
