Lowell Garrett, 75 of Winter Haven, Fla., was born to John F. Garrett and Grace B. Frost Garrett, Nov. 27, 1928, on a farm northeast of Geneva. He was one of six children in the family. He passed away at Auburndale Nursing Home in Auburndale, Fla., on Nov. 4, 2004. When the famiy moved to a farm near Fairmont, Lowell attended rural grade school District 17, to the eighth grade. He then attended Fairmont High School for a little over a year, until the family farm was taken as part of the Fairmont Army Air Base. After the death of his mother in 1943, the family moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where his father worked for Lockheed Airplane Corporation. Lowell and Donna attended John Marshall High School while Evelyn moved to Washington and was married to Walter West, formerly of Fairmont. Near the end of the school term, Lowell returned to Geneva with Donna and his father. Lowell went to work at the J.C. Penney Store and later worked for Shaner Chevrolet garage in the parts department. Lowell graduated from Geneva High School in 1946. In 1948, he became employed with the Lincoln Telephone Company in Geneva. He was inducted into the Army on July 18, 1951, and served in the Signal Corps during the Korean War. He earned the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars and a United Nations Service Medal. After his Honorable Army discharge in 1953, he returned home to Geneva, and continued working for Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph Company. He retired on June 30, 1984 after 35 years and eight months of service. He was proud and happy to have been part of the company and stated, “I’ll miss my telephone people.” After retiring from the Telephone Company, he and John Matejka, then from Massachusetts, along with a friend of John’s went to “check out Florida.” They found it to their liking and decided to buy their own places there. John bough his home near Lakeland, Lowell brought his in Winter Haven and John’s friend decided on a place near Tampa. Lowell made many improvements on his home and property and settled down to “enjoy the good life.” The three friends got together many times in the first few years. Sometimes Lowell and John drove back to see their relatives and friends. When any of his family visited, Lowell delighted in showing them “his Florida.” Lowell and John explored Florida together until John became ill. Lowell helped him as much as he could and was by his side when John passed away. After John’s death, Lowell flew home to visit rather than driving alone. Lowell worked in a cannery for over a year, but decided to quit working and spend time working on his home. He and his good neighbors, Reggie and Dee Glanzer, helped each other whenever an extra hand was needed. These neighbors welcomed Lowell as part of their family and were caretakers of him during his illness. As years passed, his sisters and friends virtually begged Lowell to move back to Nebraska, but to no avail. He’d say, “I have my house just the way I want it”, and Florida is “MY HOME.” Although inland, Cape Canaveral was near enough he could see most space flights, and he also enjoyed the beautiful Cypress Gardens at Winter Haven. Many other beautiful and unique places were nearby and he visited nearly all of them. He had planned most definitely to come back for his 60-year class reunion to see his alumni class of 1946, friends and his relatives. Poor health had caught up with him the last few years, and he was in the hospital or nursing home during the recent hurricanes in Florida. After surviving a recent stroke, he fell and broke his hip, which he failed to have the strength to survive. Lowell was a loving, kind and friendly natured person, and he had many friends and acquaintances. He never failed to give a smile and kind word to all he met. Relatives were always held close to his heart. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Grace Garrett; brother, David; brother-in-law, Walter West; sisters, Norma Lee and Nancy Lee. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Dorothy Garrett; sisters, Evelyn West, and Donna Wilkins and husband John; numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, and a host of friends. Memorial services were conducted from the United Church of Christ in Geneva at 2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 11, with Rev. Lynn Strandt officiating. Nancy Cradduck accompanied Charlotte Bumgarner who sang “On Eagles Wings” and “Just a Closer Walk With Thee.” Private committal services were held at the Geneva Public Cemetery.
