"Uncle" Joe underwent a serious operation last May at the Fort Scott hospital and owing to his advanced age and the nature of the operation, it was feared he would not recover. It was at that time he expressed the wish to attend the old church once again in the company of his three sisters. *********************** Uniontown Cicerone June 3, 1926 J. P. RALSTON DEAD One of Old Settlers of County Died Yesterday Morning--Funeral Tomorrow Afternoon J.P. Ralston, 79 years of age, and one of the old settlers here, having lived in this county most of his life, passed away yesterday at 4:50 a.m. at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Kistler, south of Uniontown, as the result of an illness with which he had suffered for more than a year. Mr. Ralston had been bedfast for many months. The deceased is survived by five daughters and one son, as follows: Mrs. Rhoda Schubert, Redfield; Mrs. Ada Bryant, Pagosa Springs, Col.: Mrs. John Kistler, south of Uniontown; Mrs. Cora Kough, Neodesha, and Mrs. D. J. Green, of Bronson. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church at Redfield, and interment will be in the Hatch cemetery, south of Uniontown. He was a brother of Mrs. Maggie Nichols and Mrs. Mary Mason. Mr. Joe Ralston of Redfield, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Kistler, Sunday morning. He had been bedfast and in the hospital several times in the past 12 months. He is a brother of Grant Ralston of this neighborhood. The family have the sympathy of their many friends. This community has been blessed as it has come in touch with the devout Christian character of this noble man. He had perhaps, more to do than any one other person in the building and sustaining for many years the Mt. Olive church, and altho he has not lived in our immediate neighborhood, we have been enjoying the results of his fine life and fear that we have experienced and great loss i his death as well as his family and neighbors. To the bereaved we extend our sincere sympathy. ********************* J. P. RALSTON DEAD Mr. J. P. Ralston, a pioneer resident of this county, who for many years lived in Rockford Valley,but of late years his home was in Redfield, died Monday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Alta Kistler. His funeral was held at 2:00 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in the Methodist church in Redfield. The services were conducted by Rev. Mills; invocation by Rev. Ryan and the obituary was read by Rev. Hinton. The music was furnished by Mrs. C. M. Draper, Mrs. Keeney, Mrs. Morris, Mrs. Turner, Mrs. Newt Gunsaullus, Mr. John Morris, Mr. Tom Turner and Mrs. Jake Harber. The active pall bearers were Messrs. S.H. Lynn, O.A. Harden, A.H. Jones, D.F. Runkle, W.F. Newcomb and Tom Turner; the honorary pall bearers were the grandsons. He was buried in the Hatch Cemetery. Mr. Ralston has always been one of the most substantial men of the community in which he lived--honest, straightforward and upright in all his dealings in business. or otherwise. He suffered all the inconveniences and hardships of pioneer life. He was a true friend, a kind brother and a devoted father and will be missed by everyone. ********************* UNIONTOWN CICERONE June 10, 1926 OBITUARY Joseph Porter Ralston, son of David and Pollyann Ralston, was born near Greenfield, Mo., January 21, 1847, where the family resided until they moved to Bourbon County, near Uniontown, in 1855, his father being one of the first four settlers on the Marmaton west of Fort Scott. Bro. Ralston has from that time until his death, Sunday morning, May 30, 1926, been a resident of Bourbon county. He has been identified with its growth, interest and progress. He professed religion early in life, at the age of 18 years, and was a charter member of Mount Olive Cumberland Presbyterian church now Petersburg church, organized by Rev. Guy Hinton in the early sixties. Ht his father's residence on the Marmaton, he was ordained an elder of that organization when only 18 years of age, and had every since filled that office with great honor and faithfulness, getting a great help and support to it, as well as being a comfort and a source of usefulness to him. Joseph Porter Ralston and Miss Lucy J. Ward were united in marriage on April 21, 1876, by Rev. Allenbaugh. To this union there were born eight children, six daughters and two sons. Bro. Ralston built a home near his father's place, where he resided until his coming to Redfield, where he has since resided. His companion departed this life here at Redfield, June 9, 1917. She was a sincere, devoted earnest Christian companion. This was a severe stroke of sorrow which Bro. Ralston felt severely, but realizing that she had gone to a better, happier, enduring home he bowed submissively to his Heavenly Father's Will. Archie A., their son, passed to his home beyond, here at Redfield, July 26, 1900. The other children who remain to mourn their great loss are: David Finis Ralston, Johnstown, Colorado. Mrs. Rhoda Shubert, Redfield, Kas. Mrs. Ada Bryant, Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Mrs. Cora Kough, Neodesha, Kans. Mrs. Nora Quick, Redfield, Kans. Mrs Lula Green, Bronson, Kans. There are eighteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. The following brothers and sisters remain and feel deeply their great loss: Mrs Mary Mason, Uniontown, Kans., Mrs. Margaret Nichols, Bronson, Kansas; Mr. Grant Ralston, Uniontown, Kansas, Mr. Elmer Ralston, Centralia, Wash.; Mrs. May Drake Uniontown, Kansas. The secret of Bro. Ralston's great influence as a husband, father, brother, citizen, friend and neighbor, was that he went early in life and drank earnestly, freely and often at the great fountain of God's grace. He stole away when he was alone and bowed in secret prayer, and communed daily with God. He related this in his recent illness. In the passing of Bro. Ralston Bourbon county and Redfield loses one of her best citizens, a kind friend, a royal, true neighbor, and one of her most devoted and useful Christian workers. He was a devoted, true and faithful husband, always anxious that is home and loved ones were happy. He will ever be remembered by sisters and brothers as a loving faithful brother. His children will ever cherish his memory as a kind, upright, true, sympathizing, devoted father. He has gone from us but is not forgotten. --written by M. F. S. Henron. ***********************
