MARY MASON CAME TO COUNTY IN 1855;BELIEVED OLDEST RESIDENT Mrs. Mary Ralston Mason of Uniontown is believed to be the oldest citizen of Bourbon county in point of continuous residence. She came to Bourbon county as a child with her parents in February, 1855. The journey was made in a covered wagon drawn by an ox team. Her family settled on a farm six miles southwest of Uniontown. Mrs. Mason celebrated her ninety-fifth birthday anniversary on March 30 at Uniontown. She is also believed to be one of the oldest residents of Kansas. She was married in 1871 and resided on a farm adjoining her father's place until 1905 when she moved to Uniontown. Mr. Mason died a short time after the couple celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Friends and relatives are interested in learning whether another Kansan has resided in the state or Bourbon county longer than Mrs. Mason. Mrs. Mason has two daughters, Mrs. Pool of the home at Uniontown and Mrs. Polly Anderson residing near Portland, Ore. She also has 14 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Among those present at the celebration of Mrs. Mason's ninety-fifth birthday were Mrs. P. Needham, Chanute; Mrs. Roger Gallord, Neodesha; Mrs. Welda McCoy, Moran, and Mrs. D___ Ralston and Mrs. Maggie Nichols, both of Uniontown. ----------- MARY MASON RITES Funeral services for Mary Mason, 97, one of Bourbon county's oldest pioneer resident, who died Wednesday, April 3, were held at the Methodist church at Uniontown Friday at 2 p.m., with the Rev. J. R. Williams officiating. He was assisted by the Rev. Charles Wogan. Mr. Williams outlined the life of "Aunt Mary", as she was known by all. She had requested some time ago that he preach her funeral services. He touched on her Christian character and her sincere faithfulness to the church when her death would permit. Two sons, her favorite hymns, were sung by Mrs. Ola Holt and daughter, Joan, with Mrs. Grace Griffith at the piano. Pallbearers were Odie Pool, Ray Beaman, Pearl Pool, Floyd Ralls, Elmer Ralston, and Orland Nichols. Interment was made in the Hatch cemetery. Out-of-town relatives here for the services included a grandson, Mr. and Mrs. Ben McQueen, Laramie, Wyo., Mr. and Mrs. Paul Gill and children, Yates Center, Mr. and Mrs. Welda McCoy and , Moran, Elmer Smith and son, Virgil, of Kansas City, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Kough, Roger Golliard, all of Neodesha, Mrs. Grace Ralston, Elsmore, Kas., Mr. and Mrs. Ben Keith, Mrs. D.R. Nichols, Mrs. Claude Crowder of Fort Scott, Mrs. Dave Mason and daughter, Lucy, of El Dorado. The following obituary was read by Mr. Wogan: Mary Francis Ralston, daughter of David T. and Polly Ann Ralston, was born in Springfield, Mo., March 30, 1849, and passed away at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Roger Gollard of Neodesha, where she had been making her home for the past year owing to the ill health of her daughter, Margaret Pool, who had cared for her in her home at Uniontown the past 29 years. At the age of six years she came from Missouri to Bourbon county with her parents in a covered wagon drawn by an ox-team, and settled on the old Ralston homestead six miles southwest of Uniontown, where she grew to womanhood. In 1868 she was married to B.F. Mason and to this union six children were born, four daughters and two sons. Her husband, two daughters, Mrs. Minnie Brown and Mrs. Olive Keith, an infant son, Edward, and David preceded her in death. Two daughters survive, Margaret Ann Pool, Neodesha, and Pauline Etta Anderson of Portland, Ore. Also, one half-sister, Mrs. May Drake, Uniontown, and one half-brother, Elmer Ralston, Olympia, Wash. Fourteen grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren also survive, besides a host of other relatives and friends. She united with the Methodist church when but a child and has been a devoted Christian these many years. She was also a charter member of the Royal Neighbor Lodge of Uniontown.
