Zittle, was born in Zittlestown, Boonsboro District, Washington County, Maryland. Joseph Zittle and Malinda Spielman were married on 3 March 1861 in Boonsboro. The groom's and bride's families had both been enumerated in 1860 in Boonsboro District. Joseph Zittle, son of Catherine (née Hutzle) and Peter H. Zittle, was born in Zittlestown, Boonsboro District, Washington County, Maryland. Joseph Zittle and Malinda Spielman were married on 3 March 1861 in Boonsboro. The groom's and bride's families had both been enumerated in 1860 in Boonsboro District. The couple had five children, their full names and birth dates were recorded in Malinda's Bible; four children lived to maturity. Joseph Zittle enlisted as a private for one year of military service on 1 November 1864 in Frederick, Maryland, and was mustered in that day in Company G, 5th Regiment, Maryland Volunteer Infantry, which was then engaged in the Siege of Petersburg, Virginia. According to his enlistment papers, he was age 25, a laborer born in Washington County, Maryland; he was 5 feet, 4 inches tall; had blue eyes, brown hair, and a fair complexion. During Private Zittle's months of service, the 5th Maryland participated in: Battle of Hatcher's Run, 5-7 February 1865, a Union victory; and the Battle of Appomattox Court House, 9 April 1865, resulting in the surrender of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. The 5th Maryland mustered out of service on 1 September 1865; Private Zittle was discharged 6 days later. Joseph Zittle was enumerated in 1870 in Boonsboro District, working as a day laborer. In 1880, he and his family were enumerated in Morgan County, West Virginia, where he was a farmer. By 1890 Joseph and Malinda Zittle had moved to Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland. Joseph Zittle had some difficulty in being awarded his veteran's pension. His absences from his company in August 1865 for medical treatment were at first mistaken for desertion.
