She married Elmer Beveridge Wallahan 24 Oct 1911 at the Methodist Church in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Ferne and Elmer Beveridge Wallahan had two sons. Herbert Colling Wallahan aka. "Wally Brady" (9 Dec 1915 - 7 Jul 1998) and Elmer Bruce Wallahan (2 Jul 1917 and is still living at 97 years of age). Herbert had one daughter Kelly and Bruce has two daughters Sandee and Sharon. Their great grandchildren are Bruce, Victoria and Tristan Benson. Ferne and Elmer's great-great grandchildren are Jennifer and Alexander Benson who resides in Bayern, Germany, and Octavian Benson, Seattle, Washington After her husband's death in 1933, Ferne and her two teenage sons moved from Council Bluffs, Iowa to Hastings, Iowa. Her father Nicholas Colling owned and operated the Colling General Store there. She saved enough money to purchase her home on Marion Ave. in Malvern, Iowa where she lived until 1975. Her son Bruce thought it best for her to come live with him in Omaha, Nebraska. Ferne was well known and loved in Malvern, Iowa. After retiring from Waller Trucking as their book keeper she volunteered as the librarian at the Malvern Library. At the same time she would drive her 1950 Kaiser delivering mail and food to her elderly shut-in rural friends. One of her friends had become blind, so Ferne brought home the lady's cat so that the cat would not trip the woman causing her to fall. By the very next morning the cat had given birth to four kittens. Ferne was able to find homes for only two of the kittens, so Ferne kept the mother cat and the other two kittens. The male kitten 'Duckie' lived past seventeen years and the other male 'Boy' lived past twenty years and moved with her to Omaha. In 2007, Ferne's Malvern home was for sale on the real estate market. Ferne's two granddaughter's Sandee and Sharon toured and photographed the home. The real estate agent informed them that even after 32 years since Ferne had sold the house, the house was still known throughout the area as 'Ferne Wallahan's House'. In 2007, her next door neighbor Glen Atkins reminisced his Ferne Wallahan stories with her granddaughters. Most of them pertained to her 'lead' foot while driving her 1950 Kaiser sedan. Ferne was an avid gardener and grew her own fruits and vegetables. She insisted on 55 mounds of potatoes to be planted every year. She canned her own produce into her 90s. And at age 94 she would prune her trees. She loved peonies, roses and irises. Every morning she would rise at 4:00am to percolate her coffee defrost her homemade chunky apple sauce spread and bake fresh bread for breakfast and later meals in the day. Her motto was 'that potatoes were for every meal'. Next her schedule included the New York Times Crossword Puzzle followed by game shows. She loved baseball and kept track of all the teams and their scores throughout the seasons. She was quite the seamstress and made all of her own clothes. Ferne was well accomplished at crochet. In her younger years she played piano and organ at the local theaters for the Silent Motion Pictures. There are so many Ferne stories that would fill an entire book. Head Stone Notes: Ferne's granddaughter, Sharon designed the head stone to reflect Ferne's fondness for birds. Ferne loved to watch birds. The Cardinal was her favorite bird and the Meadow Lark is the State Bird of Iowa.
