When her children were adults in the United States, ready to marry or with spouses giving information for their death records, the spellings given for her maiden name varied greatly from what was used in the Wurttemberg region. With Germanic rules not known, not taught in schools, the spellers made guesses and "sounded out" four syllables for her, with little consistency. The version closest to Meschenmoser was perhaps Mesirmosier, more French in appearance than German. It appeared in Civil War biographical notes, backed by censuses, for daughter Anna's husband, Private Frederick Winch. He was discussed along with his fellow troop members of Company D, 27th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, with the men of the 27th Iowa ordered alphabetically. Her work is careful. 13 of the men were captured by the Confederates, then taken to the infamous Andersonville Prison in Georgia.) Her marriage record back in Wurtemberg in Oct. of 1844 is hard to find at FamilySearch.org, without knowing her proper spelling (that used also on her children's baptismal records). Her name was written correctly for the marriage summary. However, her husband's surname of Futterer had the beginning letter of F mis-read as an H, the "tt" as "ff", and the "erer" ending as "ner". The marriage record gave her birth year as 1822, her spouse Martin's, as 1806. Both were within rounding error of the birth years implied by their ages in their 1870 US Census. Her mother was named as "Kreszenz Köhler", Martin's mother, as "Seraphina Metzler". Her father was given as "Michael Meschenmoser". His father was mis-read as "Benedict Huffner" ("Benedict Futterer") Her last US Census in Iowa was the 1870, in Volga Twp., Clayton County. In the next US Census, the 1880, her still farming spouse called himself a widower. Only two of their many children were still at home in 1880, William and Wilhelmine (Minnie) . With no exact death date, an estimate would be after the summer of 1870 and before the summer of 1880. 1875 is the "closest" estimate, in the sense that it is "off " by no more than 5 years. The Civil War piece on daughter Anna's husband gave Josephine's death as "about 1875". Findagrave allows using an estimate as long as the reasoning is explained in the bio.
