In further memorial to Uncle Joshua He was born in this community on the homestead which was settled by his ancestors. He stayed at the homestead, where he was living at the time of his death, all of his life. He was born in a log cabin which was across a small creed from where his present home is located. In later years, he built the house where he was living at the time of his death. He only left the homestead for short periods of time when in pursuit of employment. Only once did he consider relocating and that was when he worked for the McNary Sawmill Co. and they cout out at McNary, La. The company tried to get him to move to McNary, Arizona where the sawmill moved to. But he refused, the roots were too deep here in the Union Hill Community. His great grandparents came to America from England. He has a host of relatives, most of whom are in the Jasper, Texas area. His occupation was varied and colorful in his pursuit of happiness. He worked in the foresstry and farm related jobs for his livlihood. Listed below are most of his many occupations throughout. Member of Survey Party for Railroad in Union Hill community Member of Survey Party in the South Louisiana area Cut saw-logs; Hewed Cross Cut Ties; Split Rails; Split Lumber Carpenter-Helped build McNary Sawmill, built several houses for others. Farmer-Always maintained farm operation as long as health permitted. Loved Hunting-Hunted until eyes began to fail. He loved nature and the creations of God, his life work reflected so by his love for farming, hunting and knowledge of the forest and wildlife. He loved his family. He loved his country and was ready to go to World War I, however, the war ended and he did not get the call. He loved America. He believed in the American Way. He believed strongly in political process and that everyone should vote. Elections being of extreme importance in the American Process. Read by: Rev. I met Joshua Ashmore about 1970 when my mother wanted to see where her parents lived and to visit her mothers grave-site. He was an amazing man to talk to. I have searched my Ashmore family for over 50 years. [email protected]
