His father and forebears spelled their name Wilhoit Obituary SUDDEN DEATH OF AN OLD CITIZEN We are pained to announce the death of Joshua Wilhite, an old citizen of this place. On Saturday afternoon last he went to the timber with his son, John E. Wilhite, to get a load of wood, and dropped dead while in the act of picking up a stick to throw into the wagon. We have been informed that he had for some time been afflicted with something in the nature of heart disease, and had frequent spells of suffocation, but heretofore the symptoms always warned him of their approach. It seems he had no warning on the occasion of his death, and was beyond breathing when his son, who was at the time engaged in watering the horses, went to his assistance. His age was 63 years. He leaves an aged widow, several sons and daughters, and large circle of friends to mourn his death. Joshua Wilhite came to this county in 1857 or 1858, and took a claim about 3 miles southeast of town, which he improved and brought to a good state of cultivation. For several years he had lived in the village, working most of the time at his trade - wheelwright. Here he built two houses. He was hard working and frugal man, a quiet, unobtrusive citizen, and humble and upright Christian, having been a member of the Christian church for about 30 years. His funeral took place Monday at the church of which he had been a faithful member and was attended by a large number of relatives and friends. An impressive sermon was preached by Elder John Miller, of Neosho Rapids.
