Miller Waverly's Oldest Resident Marks Her 103rd Birthday Mrs. Julia Strom, at 103 and Waverly's oldest citizen, is the number one booster for the Bartels Home where she resides. Her son, E.A. Rowray of Rock Island, Illinois, comes to Waverly every three months to visit her and he says, "She never fails to tell me how happy she is at the Home; how wonderful the care is and how everyone there is nice to her." Mrs. Strom is exceptionally alert, answering any questions almost at once. She enjoys excellent eyesight. Although not wearing glasses she can see and identify people, from her room window, as they get out of their cars in the parking lot. Hard Working Mrs. Strom, prior to her retirement to the Home, was one of the hardest working persons in Waverly. She learned to labor as a young girl when her father died at an early age while the family lived near Marble Rock. The mother and three daughters continued to run that farm, for several years, though all work had to be done by hand. In addition, she and her mother worked for other farmers in the area with the daughter drawing §1 a day and the mother §2.50. Mrs. Strom was married to Charles Rowray at the age of 16. Their wedding night was spent at the J.C. Garner home, now being razed at the north edge of Waverly. In Garner, Bowman Homes Mr. Rowray worked for Garner for a number of years. Later Mrs. Strom worked on the household staff of J. H. Bowman, a prominent early day Waverly family. Her prowess as a cook became well known and she catered or worked for many well known Waverly families until past 80 years of age. Her son, Ed, asked his mother how she gained such a reputation as a cook and she replied, "I always tasted the food before I served it." Sunday's birthday event included visits by her sister, Florence Heyl of Washburn; her son Ed; grandson Dave Rowray of Waverly and great granddaughter Mrs. William Blair, Cedar Falls. Pinned on the wall of her room were congratulatory letters from Sen. Jack Miller and Governor Robert Ray. Mrs. Julia A. Strom, 103, passed away Friday morning, Dec. 31 at the Bartels Lutheran Home in Waverly where she had been a resident for the past five years. Julia A. Keister was born on dec.19, 1868 in Marble Rock, Iowa. She was married to Charles Rowray, and from this union two sons were born, Claude and Edward. She was later married to Ivan Strom. She has spent almost all of her lifetime in Waverly and was very active until she entered the Bartels Home. She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, her son, Claude, two sisters and one grandson.
