Description	:	Larry graduated from Lincoln High School in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was drafted into the US Army during the Vietnam War. Larry was wounded while on a jungle clearing mission near Lai Khe, Vietnam on June 8, 1968 and died on June 9, 1968. On July 1, 1968 Captain A.F. PRIVATE FIRST CLASS E3 United States Army Company B 2nd Battalion (Mechanized) 2nd Infantry Awarded: Bronze Star Medal with "V" device Date of Action: 8 June 1968 Theater: Republic of Vietnam Reason: For heroism not involving participation in aerial flight, in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam: On this date, Private First Class Smith was serving as a rifleman with a mechanized rifle platoon. His unit was providing security for the engineers' rome plow operations in the Michelin Rubber Plantation. He was riding atop his armored personnel carrier when heavy contact was made with a large, well concealed Viet Cong force. In the initial burst of hostile fire, Private First Class Smith's vehicle took a direct hit by a Viet Cong rocket propelled grenade and he was blown off the truck severely wounded. Undaunted by his painful injury, Private First Class Smith recovered his composure and began directing a devastating volume of fire into the enemy positions. He remained in his exposed position, despite his painful wound, to provide protective fire to cover the evacuation of his wounded comrades, refusing to be evacuated himself. Private First Class Smith directed continuous bursts of accurate automatic weapons fire upon the entrenched enemy, until he was rendered unconscious from the loss of blood and forced to be evacuated. His courageous stand enabled his wounded comrades to be safely evacuated. His exemplary courage and selfless concern for the welfare of his comrades undoubtedly saved numerous friendly lives while inflicting devastating losses upon the large Viet Cong force. Private First Class Smith's outstanding display of aggressiveness, devotion to duty, and personal bravery is in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army. Authority: By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962. On August 21, 1968, Major General Kenneth G. Wickham wrote: I have the honor to inform you that your son has been awarded posthumously the Bronze Star Medal for heroism, Army Commendation Medal, Purple Heart, and the Good Conduct Medal. Prior to death Larry had been awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, combat Infantryman Badge and the Marksman Badge with rifle bar. Arrangements are being made to have these awards presented to you in the near future by a representative of the Commanding General, Fifth United States Army. My continued sympathy is with you. Larry is buried in the Pawnee City Cemetery at Pawnee City, Nebraska, the only serviceman interred there who was killed in action in Vietnam. Assigned to "B" Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry, 1st Infantry Division. Arrived "in country" on 8-31-1967 and was killed in action in Binh Duong Province, South Vietnam.
