The story is worth telling not because of fame or public recognition. More importantly, it was a life lived in witness of faith, persistence, dedication, devotion, patience, humor and inherent kindness. This is the story of a daughter, mom (she had no in-laws because they were all "hers"), aunt, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother and friend: Laura Josephine Tilson Martin 8/7/26 – 10/8/16. The only child of Leland Tilson and Gladys Pervier Tilson, Laura grew up as others of her generation feeling the sting of the Great Depression. More hurtful, she weathered her parents' divorce and, feeling her father needed her more, chose to live with him. Remarkably, she never heard either parent say an unkind word about the other and she loved them both. During World War II, a pen pal relationship with an Army Air Corps serviceman from Iowa led to meeting in Colorado Springs and marriage to William L. Martin, Sr. When he was sent overseas, she rode the train to Ottumwa to live with Bill's parents and his youngest sister and brother, never having met them. As with others who came to know her throughout her life, she was welcomed, accepted and loved. Bill returned from the war to a wife and 18-month-old daughter. He enrolled at ISU, and the family finished college with 3 children. Although they had next to nothing in their Pammel Court residence, Laura supported her husband and cared for the children. Two more kids were to follow. Bill and Laura were married for 55 years until his death in 1998. Devoted to her husband even after his death, she requested to be buried with her wedding ring which was never taken off from her wedding day (3/29/43) onward. Children include Margaret Ann (Bernie) Flath, Janice Lee (Joel) Wormley, William L. (Sarah) Martin, Jr., Marilyn Jean (Michael) Ellsberry, and Laura Jane (John) Leland. In addition, Laura has 15 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, and 26 great great grandchildren. A voracious reader, she was musical, artistic and creative. Loving stories of the Antebellum South, she read Gone with the Wind at least 8 times and loved watching John Wayne movies with her grandchildren. She shared her love of poetry and taught her children and grandchildren to love and respect all living things. Employed as a realtor and Avon representative, her real work was as a "sweet and kind person who saw the best in everyone." In that regard, she had the ability to make everyone feel special and unique. Never learning how to nurture from a textbook, somehow she knew how important it was to touch her children when they came in from play. She was always the go-to person when life was hard to understand or when things went wrong. Laura knew just the right thing to say – sometimes when realizing a loved one simply needed to be heard, she would say nothing at all. She wrote supportive, inspiring letters to family and friends and reminded her children to "write from your heart." A great baker, no one could match her homemade bread, cinnamon rolls and pizza. Always gracious, she sincerely never received a gift that wasn't exactly what she wanted – no matter what it was, and she taught that it was truly better to give than to receive. Enduring a years-long battle with progressing dementia, she was kind to all throughout. She lived her life with grace and dignity. Emily Dickinson's poem exemplifies her life: If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain; If I can ease one life the aching, Or cool one pain, Or help one fainting robin Unto his nest again, I shall not live in vain. Mom, Grandma, Aunt Lolly, friend – you did all of this and so much more!
