Read More	The Altoona Herald January 21, 1909 OBITUARY An Old Settler Gone DIED—Thursday, January 7, 1909, at Willamette, Oregon, Mr. Lawrence Lavish after a short illness of paralysis. The body was brought to Mitchellvllle accompanied by his niece Mrs. Annie Burris. The funeral was held in the Methodist church by Rev. Manning, Thursday afternoon, January 14th after which the body was laid to rest, by the side of his wife in the Franklin Twp. cemetery. He was born in Germany, November 13, 1827, when but a child, with his parents, came to this country, therefore enduring many privation and hardships as only the old settlers experienced. They settled at what is now known as Lavish Grove. He was united in marriage to Rachel V. Alderman June 15, 1854, who died at their home in Altoona November 4, 1901, thus leaving her aged husband to tread this unfriendly world alone. Two children blessed this union, both dying in infancy. He was a kind husband and with his frugal wife had accumulated a good living and could live above want, but death makes no distinction-the rich and the poor, the king and the vassel side by side, must wither and alike turn back to earth from whence they came and God will call all to judgment. All was done that friendly hands could do to relieve his suffering but he had lived to a ripe old age. We try to bow submissively to the Lord's will although we may not be able to reconcile the anomaly with the doctrine of God's true love yet we know that here we only see through a glass darkly, but in Heaven we shall see and understand things as they are and render unto God our hearty plaudits.
