Description	:	Leif Ringen, 59, a native of Minot, who was a Washington State University (Pullman) scientist known as the veterinary school’s resident expert on fungal disease, died Tuesday of an apparent heart attack. He was born July 31, 1920, at Minot, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Matt Ringen. He attended grade and high school in Kenmare, where he graduated in 1938. Ringen was known for his development of a diagnostic test for leptospirosis, a bacterial infection which can infect all animals. He was born July 31, 1920, at Minot, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Matt Ringen. He attended grade and high school in Kenmare, where he graduated in 1938. Ringen was known for his development of a diagnostic test for leptospirosis, a bacterial infection which can infect all animals. Ringen’s test provided a method of identifying leptospirosis in the field. Ringen received an M.S. degree in bacteriology in 1948 from North Dakota State University, Fargo, and his doctorate from Washington State in 1952. From 1943 to 1946 he was a microbiologist for the Army General Hospital. He was a member of the veterinary college for 27 years, starting in 1952 as acting instructor. In 1956 he was named assistant professor of veterinary microbiology, in 1961 he was named associate professor and in 1966 was promoted to full professor. Surviving are his wife, the former Evelyn Sorensen; a brother, Jorgen Ringen, and a sister, Mrs. Olive Bodmer, both of Kenmare, several nieces and nephews.
