His memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Fort Benton. Leonard Ezra Crane, 94, passed away on Friday morning, Feb. 3, 2006. He was the son of Ezra and Louise (Patterson) Crane. Leonard spent most of his life in Fort Benton except two years he attended the University of Montana in Missoula, pursuing business. It was during the depression and as he told it, the money just wasn't available and he returned to Fort Benton. Leonard married his lifetime sweetheart and best friend, Minnie Morrison, on April 16, 1936. He like to tell the story "that Minnie didn't like school very much and one night when they had been on a date she said let's get married. He said tomorrow, and she said yes." He told his Mom, and although she wasn't happy that Minnie was only a sophomore in high school, she consented to going to Great Falls with them. Theirs was a marriage that would be an example to many and would continue for 67 years. The Cranes were blessed with two daughters, Cleo and June, and they had the home where all the kids in town would congregate and were always welcome. Minnie and Leonard were always available to take the girls and their friends to ball games and school functions and Leonard enjoyed watching the Longhorns as long as he was able to get to the games. Leonard was bookkeeper and manager of Central Service Station for many years, which was owned by his uncle, John Lepley. Leonard and Minnie were very active in the community. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, a member of the school board for many years, Fire Chief of the Volunteer Fire Department, was actively involved in the Kiwanis and during his presidency of the local organization, he and Minnie attended the International convention in St. Louis, Mo., in 1951. The Elks Club where he and Minnie danced many miles, Signal Point Golf Course, which he and Minnie managed after his retirement from the station, as well as many years of bowling, were some of his favorite pastimes. Leonard was preceded in death by both his daughters in vehicle accidents and his beloved Minnie. His cousins, Jack Lepley of Fort Benton, Margaret Wilhelm of Portland, Ore., and Ann Munroe of Ann Arbor, Mich., survive him.
