James Ward, esteemed Asbury resident, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Beulah Turner, where he has been residing for some time, on Saturday last, after an illness of more than a year. He was 82 years of age. "Captain Jim", as he was known to his many friends, was born in the Mariner's scion of this city, on October 23, 1856, the son of the late John Thomas Ward, a political leader of note during his lifetime, and Mrs. Elizabeth Sterling Ward. An old-time bay captain, Mr. Ward until his retirement, had been master of sailing vessels since he was sixteen years old. Among the vessels he owned and sailed were the "Jacob S. Barnes", the "Hattie Stark" and the "L. James". For a number of years he was captain of the "Maggie Phillips." During this period of his life he sailed to the West India Islands, trading from there to New York. His last active service at sea was about fifteen years ago, on the Merchant and Miners ships sailing from Philadelphia to Miami, Fla. Until illness and advanced age lessened his activities, Captain Jim was a staunch member of the Asbury Methodist Church and was a great worker in the Adult Bible Class. His many wonderful traits of character made for him a wide circle of friends, who mourn his passing. A number of years after the passing of his first wife, the late Lizzie Travis Sterling Ward, of this city, he was wed to Mrs. Sadie Huggins Ward, of Grimstead, Va., who survives. Besides his widow he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Beulah Turner, of this city and Mrs. Marion Webster, of Baltimore, and two sons, Noah Thomas Ward and Charles E. Ward, both of whom sail on large Merchant and Miners ships. Seven grandchildren, Dorothy Hill, Evelyn Ward, James Avery Ward, Charles L. Sterling, Elizabeth Sterling, Charles Russell and Virginia Ward, and one great-grandchild, Robert Ward, also survives. Funeral services were held from the Asbury Methodist Church Tuesday at 2:30 p. m. with the Rev. J. T. Rowlenson, pastor, officiating. interment was in the Asbury cemetery.
