His exemplary Christian character and unaffected integrity gave him a commanding influence in the neighborhood where he lived so many years. Such men as Lewis Foster can receive no higher eulogy than the simple statement that throughout the long years, his daily life was the best commentary upon his professions that could be written. For this good man and excellent friend the Patriot expresses that feeling of profound regard entertained for him by all who knew him. He was among the first settlers of the county and belonged to that hardy and courageous class of men who pushed out early into a wild and new country, and in a quarter of a century converted the virgin prairie into cultivated farms, made roads, built bridges, erected churches and school houses, and establised Christian and prosperous communities. They are rapidly passing away but their excellent precepts and example are the (unreadable) new generation of men and women who have succeeded them.
