Ephraim Foster was born in Bedford county, Pennsylvania, July 2, 1826, where he grew to manhood. He came to Chicago in 1851, where he remained only a short time, and then came to Jefferson county, Iowa. He was married to Miss Isabel Harding near Fairfield, March 17, 1853, and to them were born three daughters and five sons, all of whom, except one son, Henry, who died in infancy, survive him and were present at the funeral. In 1853 he, with his wife, came to Pleasant township, this county, where he entered 200 acres of land, and where he with his family had resided ever since, with the exception of one year spent in Chariton. He was one of Lucas county's early pioneers, being the second settler in Pleasant township, a man by the name of Strong being the first. He was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal church early in life, and ever since had been an earnest, consistent and faithful member. For over sixty years he was one of the strong pillars in the church, always ready with his influence, vote or money to sustain the cause of his dear Lord. He donated the land for two church sites and a cemetery, and his body now rests in the latter. He helped build both of the churches. He was a firm believer in the Wesleyan doctrine and sanctification, and not only expressed the experience, but lived it. In later years he was identified with the Holiness movement that is spreading over the country. He was a kind husband and father and a true friend. His sickness was brief and painful. On Monday, Jan. 13, while doing some work about the farm, he hurt his hand on a nail and blood poisoning set in, and on the Friday forenoon following he passed peacefully away, his last words being, "Praise the Lord." The children, together with the wife, who survive him are: George W. Foster, Akron, Colo., ; Mrs. Sarah A. Miller, Marceline, Mo.; Mrs. Mary Weiford, Chariton; Mrs. Cornelia Fluke, John Y., Albert A., and Ezra E. Foster, all of Olmitz.
