Description	:	Lillie Agatha Spamer was the 10th child of Ludwig and Julia Spamer, born on April 20, 1865, just 11 days after Lee surrendered to Grant in the Civil War. In fact, Lillie's oldest brother, Gus, who was 22 years older, was serving with Gen. U.S. Grant in the Union Army when Lillie was born in Baltimore. In fact, Lillie's oldest brother, Gus, who was 22 years older, was serving with Gen. U.S. Grant in the Union Army when Lillie was born in Baltimore. She and her sister Miriam were the last 2 children born to their parents and remained close their entire lives. The 2nd photo in this memorial is believed to be Lillie and Miriam, about 1870. They were the only Spamer daughters to marry, while Ollie, Millie, and Tillie remained single. Both Lillie and Miriam each gave birth to 6 children. Lillie and Walter raised their family on a farm in rural Harford County, while Miriam and Joseph raised a family in Baltimore City, where her he had a business. In the 1880 Census, Lillie was 15 years old and had attended school, probably Eastern High School, like her older sisters. In 1883, her parents moved away from the center of Baltimore and out to Markley Avenue. Between 1883 and her 1886 marriage, Lillie may have lived on Markley Avenue with her parents or possibly at Rockland Farm near Perry Hall, the residence of her brother Elmer Spamer. One member of the Watters family recalled that when Walter first saw Lillie as she was descending the stairs at Rockland, he knew he was going to marry her. The beautiful photo of Lillie in this memorial was probably taken around the time of her wedding. (After Lillie's death, this same photo was displayed in 2 small, gold easel frames as a remembrance.) Walter and Lillie's wedding took place at Rockland in September 1886. Lillie's brothers surprised the couple with a wedding present of an ornately carved, dark oak bedroom set with mirrored dresser, marble-top washstand, night stand, and a bed that had a 6' headboard and 4' footboard. All of Lillie's 6 children and many of her grandchildren were born in that bed at Walter and Lillie's farm she named "Maple Mere". The bedroom set is still being used in the family today. Lillie was very petite, probably about 4' 10" in height and wore a size 2 shoe. Like many couples, they were quite a contrast since Walter was about 6' tall. He was more athletic and fun-loving, while Lillie was more serious, played the piano, and like to read books. Her father Ludwig had worked at a piano factory in Baltimore (probably Stieff's which was very close to their house). He was listed in the city directory as a piano maker and a piano tuner from 1867-1882. Walter and Lillie's son, Arch played the violin throughout his life. It was understood that the instrument came from the Spamer family or that maybe one of the Spamers made the violin. Walter and Lillie had 15 grandchildren and enjoyed watching the next generation grow up. They even lived to see some of their 34 great-grandchildren.
