Louis E. Shors, 26-year old Pocahontas grocer, died with a heart attack on the Pocahontas athletic field, Tuesday evening at about 8:30 o’clock. He passed away without a moment of warning while his boys on the Sacred Heart high school football team were practicing with their alma mater squad from the public high school under the floodlights. His unsuspecting wife was at their home and his father and mother were at their home just a few blocks away. A few moments before his death, Louis, who has been coaching the local parochial school team with Leo Hummes, left his team on the field and walked to the players’ bench on the west side of the field, seating himself beside J. F. Davis. He complained of not feeling well and then slumped against Davis and died. Dr. F. E. Heathman was watching the practice. He rushed to Shors side and as those nearby stretched his limp body on the ground, he took his pulse but only caught a heartbeat, or two. The young man’s body was carried into the building and the Rev. D. A. Towell, of Rolfe, and an undertaker were summoned. Louis Edward Shors was born on a Lincoln township farm, May 12, 1904. When 10 years of age, the family moved to Pocahontas and this has been his home since. After his four years in Pocahontas high school where he was prominent in athletics, he became an employee in the Charles Schissel store. He continued in this place of business under M. Cohen and Mr. Sandler and in January of this year purchased the grocery department from Mr. Sandler. On September 10, 1929, he was united in marriage with Elizabeth O’Brien, a Pocahontas girl. Besides Mrs. Shors, the mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. John C. Shors, a sister, Mrs. Martin Alexander, and a brother George, who is a student at Buena Vista college, survive.” OBITUARY: “Rolfe Arrow”, Rolfe, Iowa November 6, 1930. “Local Diddings” “Mr. and Mrs. Lee Sernett and family of Hampton were over night visitors at the Mrs. Mary Sernett home Thursday. They were enroute to Pocahontas to attend the funeral of their cousin, Louis Shors. Rolfe relatives attending this funeral Friday were Mrs. Mary Sernett and daughter, Miss Abelina; Mr. and Mrs. James Sernett; Mr. and Mrs. Will Sernett and family; and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Roberts.” OBITUARY: “Pocahontas Democrat” Pocahontas, Iowa November, 6, 1930 page 7. “A Tribute To L. E. Shors” “Many of the students of the Pocahontas high school mourned the death of Louis Shors which occurred so unexpectedly recently. Mr. Shors was a deservedly popular member of the Pocahontas high school Alumni. He was a star in all high school athletics, especially football. He was a good student and entered many outside activities beside the athletics. His popularity continued after his graduation and everyone recognitzed him as a very influential and deserving young man.
