He was baptized in the Ida Methodist Episcopal Church. He attended Ida Public School and Beatrice Business College. He was married to Maude Mildred Jefferson on February 25, 1912, and two sons were born to the union. They lived on a farm near Munden until 1943, when they moved to Chester. In 1945 they moved to Hebron and continued to farm in Kansas. He and his son, Alvin, operated Hebron Livestock Commission Company. He was a member of the Nebraska Livestock Auction Markets, and the Hebron Chamber of Commerce. He remained active in the livestock business, and auctioned cattle on his 90th birthday. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Maude in 1961; two brothers, Ralph and Merle; one sister, Essie. He is survived by two sons, Ival J. Ramsbottom of Arlington, Tex., and Alvin J. Ramsbottom of Hebron; two grandsons, James L. and Thomas J. Ramsbottom; three granddaughters: Mrs. Jane Williams, Sarah Ramsbottom of Arlington, Tex., and Mrs. Laura Vasques of Dallas, Tex.; one great-grandson, Jeffrey Ramsbottom of Hebron. Funeral services were held March 23 at the United Methodist Church in Hebron with Revs. Douglas Allen and Robert Fayre officiating. Burial was in the Ida Rural Cemetery in Munden.
