Obituary from the "Leader" of Malvern, Iowa dated 10 Feb 1972: Many Paid Final Tribute to Louis Knop Wednesday Funeral services for Louis J. Knop were conducted at St. John's Lutheran Church, Hastings, Ia., Wednesday morning with Rev. Henry Wessenberg and Rev. Gary Dassaw officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Glen Knop and Mrs. Melvin Leu, accompanied by Mrs. Gary Perkins. Two songs sung at the services, Nearer My God to Thee and The Lord's Prayer, were of his own choosing. Pallbearers were cousins of the deceased, Bruno Leu, Eugene Leu, Carl Leu, Julius Knop, Edwin Leu and Gerald Leu. Caring for the floral tributes were: Mrs. Francis Rosmajzl, Mrs. Newell Crink, Mrs. R. W. Cardwell, Mrs. Ernst Pontow, Mrs. Bruno Leu and Mrs. Martin Seipold. Following is his obituary: Louis Julius Knop, the son of Herman K. Knop and Alma Leu Knop, was born Sept. 26, 1905, on a farm near Ventura, in Hancock County. He was baptized Oct. 22, 1905, St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church at Garner. As a young child the family moved to Clear Lake and in 1919 to a farm north and east of Malvern. The family attended St. John's Lutheran Church, Hastings, where, at the age of 16, he was confirmed in the Lutheran faith and continued as a member, serving in various offices. He enjoyed singing in the St. John's Choir and also the Area Choir. Mr. Knop attended Lutheran high school and Business college, Deshler, Nebr., and was a graduate of the class of 1923-24. He then took a position with the Malvern Trust and Savings Bank, where he was a faithful employee for 41 years. A member of the Southwest Iowa Bankers Association, he served as president for one year. On Sept. 28, 1930, he was united in marriage with Alma Louise Suhr at St. John Lutheran Church, Marysville, Nebr. with Rev. W. F. Rittamel officiating. Their marriage was blessed with two daughters. Mr. Knop had a great love for his town and community which led him to participate actively in many organizations. These include 17 years as treasurer of the Malvern school district, Commercial Club, park board and 15 years on the Malvern Town Council. At the time of his death he was secretary of the Mills County fair board and in 1971, was made Honorary 4-H club member. He was instrumental in the creation of the annual 4th of July celebration and served as president of the Dutch Gun Club for the last several years. He was a certificate member of the Malvern Volunteer Fire department, having joined in November, 1944, and a member of the Malvern Gun Club. After an illness of over three years, he fell asleep in his Savior on Feb. 6, 1972, having reached the age of 66 years, four months and 11 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and an infant grandson, Kevan Boyd. His survivors include: his wife, Alma; daughter Kathleen and her husband, Robert Scheel; grandchildren are: Curtis, Christopher and Alison Boyd, Rian and Robert Wade Scheel; brothers: Walter, Everett, Alfred and Lester; sisters: Mrs. Fred (Della) Smardo, Mrs. William (Darlene) Pollack, Mrs. Howard (Viola) Green, Mrs. Jack (Vanda) Christensen and Mrs. Orlo (Lola) Jones. Interment was in the Malvern cemetery. Mansfield Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
