The Wohletz's are Germans who came here from Austria. When Mr. and Mrs. Anton Wohletz landed in Atchison in May of 1881, they had three boys and one daughter and just $4 in money. Louis Wohletz was the eldest of the boys. Mr. and Mrs. Anton Wohletz rented the Mrs. Kelly 80-acre farm near Kramer's nortwest of Atchison. Louis was the oldest of the boys and he immediately went to work as a farm hand for Henry Meyers, north of town at $10 a month. Practially every cent earned by him went to purchase farm implements for his parents. Four years later he had become such a noted worker that he was receiving $18 a month. Out of his entire amount he kept just $2 for himself and gave the balance to his parents. In 1890 he was married to Miss Mary Kilar (Keeler), daughter of Wantzel Kilar (Wenzel Keeler), who lived near Huron. Mr. Wohletz had just $25 and his wife $35. They rented a quarter section from Mr. Kline and started out to make their fortune. That was 23 years ago this spring. Now Mr. and Mrs. Louis Wohletz own 892 acres of land in Atchison county, and all they owe is $12,000, upon the farm recently purchased from Mr. Riggs. Mr. and Mrs. Anton Wohletz are now dead, but they inherited only $900 from that estate, but from the Kilar (Keeler) estat they received the quarter section upon whch the first made their home. Frank Wohletz, who lives near Effingham and Will Wohletz, who lives on the home place, the other two brothers, are well fixed, but they have not nearly as much land as Louis Wohletz. Mr. and Mrs. Wohletz now have a family of four boys and four girls, but they work just about as hard as ever. They say they wouldn't be content to take it easy and that they are happiest when they are occupied at something about their home on the old Martin Baker farm south of Huron.
