Description	:	Mexican War: Commander, Presidio of Santa Barbara Gumesindo José Hilario Flores y [?] was born at Gaudalajara, Jalisco, New Spain, about 1800. He was commissioned an officer in the Mexican Army and posted to Monterey Presidio, Alta California, arriving there aboard the Mexican Navy warship "Morelos" in 1833. The "Morelos" had escorted the sloop "Natalia," and among the sloop's passengers was Gumesindo's future wife, María Cipriana Justina Llanos y Quintero. Read More	Mexican War: Commander, Presidio of Santa Barbara Gumesindo José Hilario Flores y [?] was born at Gaudalajara, Jalisco, New Spain, about 1800. He was commissioned an officer in the Mexican Army and posted to Monterey Presidio, Alta California, arriving there aboard the Mexican Navy warship "Morelos" in 1833. The "Morelos" had escorted the sloop "Natalia," and among the sloop's passengers was Gumesindo's future wife, María Cipriana Justina Llanos y Quintero. After the birth of their daughter, María Mauricia Dolores, in September 1834, Capitán Flores was posted to the Presidio of San Francisco where he married Cipriana Llanos y Quintero at Mission San Francisco de Asís (Dolores) on October 20, 1835 (SFD Marriage 02122). He remained at San Francisco until the Winter of 1836-37, at which time he was transferred to the Presidio of Monterey and assigned to Mission San Juan Bautista. After being promoted to major he assumed command of the Monterey Presidio in 1839 and remained at Monterey until 1842. He was transferred to assume command of the Presidio of Santa Bárbara in 1842 with residency in the presidio's comandancia. Major Flores was commander at the Presidio of Santa Bárbara when it was occupied by Commodore Stockton, U.S. Navy, on August 4, 1846. Just before Commodore Stockton arrived at the presidio, Cipriana lowered the Mexican flag and hid it in the house, then Gumesindo chopped down the flagpole so the U.S. forces could not use it to raise their flag (see: Daily News and Independent [Santa Barbara], Apr. 23, 1921; and La Prensa [Los Angeles], Vol. 10, No. 51, April 30, 1921; 1:5). When the war ended, Gumesindo retired from the Mexican Army as a brevetted Lieutenant Colonel. As an Alta California resident, he became a U.S. citizen with the transfer of California's sovereignty in 1848 and retained the presidio's former comandancia as his personal residence. After the war he worked as a butcher ("buccaria"; 1850 US Census) and later as a farmer (1860 US Census).
