Description	:	Luther Nott was a son of Benjamin Nott & Mary "Polly" Roach. He married first on January 25, 1838 in Allen County, Indiana, to Mary Strean (1819-1882), daughter of John Strean & Maria Craig. Luther & Mary had 12 children: Clarissa (died young of a severe nosebleed, according to family tradition. Washtubs were filled with bloody cloths before she finally expired from loss of blood), Maria, Mary Elizabeth, James K. Luther married 2nd in 1884 to Lucretia Rannells (1837-1926). Luther Nott died at the home of his daughter & son-in-law, Angie & Walt Nutter. No monument marks Luther's grave. His children could not agree on one; and in the end, none was erected. The photo shows Luther & Mary in 1877. Luther Nott is listed as a farmer in all the census lists except the July 13, 1860 Federal census of Pleasant township, Hardin county, Iowa, in which his occupation is listed as Tavern Keeper, age 44, with $3,000 of real estate and $350 of personal estate. Also in the household are his wife, 8 children, and Thomas Lacock, 22, a day laborer, with $150 of personal estate. Three months and 12 days later, on October 25, 1860, Thomas married Luther's daughter Mary Elizabeth Nott, age 17 in the census that year. The June 5, 1880 Federal census of Tarkio, Atchison County, Missouri, lists Luther, 67, and his wife Mary, 62, farming next door to their daughter Anna B., 19, her husband David Higbee, 29, and Anna's children: Uriah, 4; John Addison, 1, and Nora M., 1/30th. (The Higbees would have two more daughters: Laura B., and Dora, the latter born in 1893 in Montgomery County, Iowa; died 4 April 1978; wed 1918 to Thomas Piatt 1897-6 April 1978) Obituary of Luther Nott, from Fairbury Journal, Saturday, June 27, 1903, page 1, column 6 headline "At Advanced Age": "Luther Nott, aged 86 years, 8 months, and 20 days, died at the home of Walter Nutter, his son-in-law, Sunday. For the last ten years he has been partly paralyzed. He was the father of twelve children. The funeral was held Tuesday, conducted by Rev. Metcalfe of Steele City, and the remains interred in the Steele City cemetery. The funeral procession crossed the Blue (River) near Steele City over the new ferry boat."
