(Source: Thayer County, NE Marriage Records) ========================================== The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, February 12, 1948 Major Fletcher Long, son of Francis A. Long and his wife Elizabeth, was born January 25, 1866 near Burlington, Iowa, and departed this life from the Swanson Rest Home in Clay Center, Nebr., February 8, 1948, at the age of 82 years and 14 days. In 1873 he came with his parents to Nuckolls County, Nebraska, and located east of Nelson where their first home was a dug-out. On December 18, 1890 at Hebron, Nebr., he was united in marriage to Miss Tina W. Cochran. Brother Long was one of five children and only one sister, Mrs. Martha Phipps of Twin Falls, Idaho, survives. Besides his sister, there are left to mourn his departure, four children. They are: C.A. Long of Ft. Collins, Colorado; J.D. Long and Mrs. Esther Wehrman of Nelson; and Benjamin F. Long of San Mateo, California. Two children died in infancy and one son, Frank, died in 1918, at the age of 25 years. His wife, Tina, passed away September 24, 1930. There are thirteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren, besides many friends. For some years Brother Long followed the occupation of farming. He was the proprietor of a hardware store in Nelson for three years. He was Clerk of the District Court of Nuckolls County for about four years, and County Judge sixteen years. Major Fletcher Long was elected to the Masonic Lodge No. 77 May 11, 1922. Passed the Entered Apprentice May 25, 1922. He passed to the degree of Fellow Craft June 29, 1922, and passed to the degreee of Master Mason July 13, 1922. He was a member of the Nelson Presbyterian Church, uniting with it on March 3, 1918. One by one, they are leaving us -- these hardy pioneers, who migrated westward; not in a comfortable stream lined train, as we see today, but in covered wagons, the mode of travel in those early days. Here they endured the hardships, the severe winter storms, the plague of the grasshoppers, etc. But because of their endurance, determination and faith, they conquered the prairies, builded homes, churches and schools, so that we who came after them might enjoy the luxuries and comforts of modern civilization. O Pioneer! O Pioneer. Thou hast the vision true and clear, As when beneath thine own oak tree Thy city rose in majesty With generation yet to be Serving the world from sea to sea. O Pioneer! O Pioneer! Without reproach and without fear, Thou seekest now the City fair Whose meets and bounds are set foursquare; Eternity spreads welcome rare As thou art pioneering there. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock in the Klawitter Mortuary, with Rev. Clarence V. Powell in charge. Lowell Powell sang two solos and was accompanied by Mrs. H.H. Hite. The Masons had charge of the burial services which were in the Nelson cemetery (sic).
