More Information on the Pettit family from Muscatine, Iowa Greenwood 1st burial was 1843 per Muscatine Historical lady - 8 March 2011. She is checking for information on the family. Clinton was named after Clinton DeWitt who was known as the Grandfather of th Erie Canal and one of the 1st governor of New York. Who was friends of his family in New York. Clinton was said to have never married. His father John Riddell Pettit was the executor of his probate which were dated 1846. So did he die in 1846 or just do them in 1846? and if he died in 1856 which some in the family think - how could John Riddell Pettit have excuted his probate when he died in Nov. 1855? I will still be working on these issue and family burial in the future. Mother was Huldah Gleason Pettit 1796 - 1834 born in NY or Ohio - Married 1820 to John Riddell Pettit 2nd Winterset court house burt down - losing many records. Probate says died in Winterset, Iowa too. Married Huldah Gleason about 1820 in Genesee, Monroe Co. NY. She was born 1795 in NY. Died 1835 in Ny or Ohio. Children were: Clinton Dewitt Pettit - born abt 1821 died in Muscatine, Iowa. Cornelia Pettit - born abt 1823 married Seth Gates in Muscatine, Iowa - It was Seths 1st marriage. 3 kids by this marriage. Died 1864 in Muscatine, Muscatine Co. Iowa Malvina Pettit - born abt 1825 Married Milton Gillet 1864 in Ohio. Nathaniel Pettit - born abt 1827 Died 1864 Union Township, Madison Co. Married Ann Doe about 1838 in Iowa. George Washington Pettit - born abt June 1828 Died 8 October 1876 in Cherokee, Kansas Married ELizabeth Williamson 28 Jan 1852 in Harrison, Louisa Co. Iowa. SHe died 4 February 1911 in Ramah, EL Paso Co. Colorado. Jonathan H. Pettit - born abt 1829 Married Sarah Buckingham died in IL, Buried in Guymon Cemetery - some thought Benton Co. Arkansas, but his unit served there and he was a disable veteran and live in Danville, IL soldiers home for years. Died in the snow walking to see his Niece per newspaper. Iowa. 2nd wife was Mary L (______) Pettit - per John Riddell Pettits Probate in Winterset in 1856. Melancton Pettit - born in 1840 in Winterset, Iowa. buried in Lincoln Cemetery Lincoln, Missouri in a unmarked grave. Married Mary Jane Strickland in Muscatine, Iowa in 4 Sept 1861 per IAGENWEB. John Wesley Pettit born in 1854 in Iowa - Married Sarah Gilliam, 2nd wife Julia Ann Rice. Had 9 Children - was killed 24 Nov 1903 in mine explosion in Bonanza, AR. 13 men were killed. The two cemeteries are only a few miles away from each other. One is in Cedar Twp. and the other in 76 Twp. If you scroll down the cemetery listing page you will see more complete listings per cemetery. I found them by searching the WPA Graves Registration project who's link is posted on the http://iagenweb.org/muscatine/cemetery.htm page. select Muscatine County, then enter the last name and it will give you a list. I also checked Pettit. It only pulled up one Mainda H. Pettit wife of David d. 27 Aug 1879. If you go to the Iowa Gravestone Photo Project and enter Gates we do have a photo of L.W. Gate and his wife Mary. There is also one of Rev. Peter Gates & wife Elizabeth. Those photos are under copy right. You may download a copy for your personal records. YOU MAY NOT COPY THE PICTURE AND SEND IT TO FIND A GRAVE. Only the person who took the picture may do that. As to going out to take photos, now is not the time of year to do it. It is rain, ice, snow and mud season here. I can go to the cemeteries to take pictures however being they are quite a distance away request $.35 per mile for gas. It is a good 20-25 min drive to get to those cemeteries. People may or may not have a marker. Won't know until I get there. What is the full date listed on the probate record that you have? I see your last name spelled as Petit, Pettit, Pettitt, Pettite to name a few. Newspapers are on microfilm at Musser Public Library. It is possible that an obituary might be found. My eyes ache a bit. Reading old papers on microfilm is hard at times. Your people in Muscatine County lived in its farthest corner in the southwest region. Very close to the Louisa / Muscatine County line. Which tends to mean that no one cared to put an obit in the Muscatine Journal because Muscatine was so far away. There was a paper down in Wapello, Louisa Co. and in Columbus Junction, but they were as far away as Muscatine was. The only obits I found were for Mrs. Eva Gates, widow of S. P. Gates died Sat. Noon at her home north of Letts in Cedar Twp. The cemetery were she is buried was named Jayne cemetery. (also known as Jean and Oak Grove cemetery) have copy for you. Mrs. Mary Gates who died in Marshalltown, IA. There was a mention that she was the wife of Dr. L. W. Gates, of the Soldiers' Home. Have copy for you. We also had an obit on the Muscatine site, but I discovered that the submitter had entered the wrong year of death. It was not 1900 but 1904. Have just now fixed that on the site. Mary Shellabarger, eldest daughter of John M. and Ruth Shellabarger was born in Montgomery county, Ohio, October 18th; 1816, and died in Marshalltown, Ia. Feb. 21, 1900. When but a young girl she came with her parents to Iowa where they settled on a farm in Seventy-Six township, where she crew to womanhood, developing those graces and charms of mind and heart which were so lovable and endeared her to her many friends. March 1, 1866, she was united in marriage to L. W. Gates. Who had but recently finished four years of service in the civil war. For nearly thirty-eight years she walked loyal and true by her husband's side, sharing the joys and sorrows of their wedded life. Mrs. Gates possessed one of those kindly sympathetic natures which goes out in generous deeds of helpfulness to all who might be in need. In her early girlhood days she united with the United Brethren church and in after life when ever she moved into a new community, connected herself with some branch of Christ's church and took up her part of the work in building His kingdom. Gates d. 7 Feb 1878 searched thru Tues Feb 12th nothing L. W. Gates d. 4 Apr 1911 searched thru Sat. April 8th nothing (try looking in Marshal Town) John S. Gates d. 19 Apr 1870 searched thru Sat Apr 23rd nothing I looked at Clinton D. Petit's probate record on microfilm at the library. It was opened on Nov 3, 1846 and did not close until 1849. They might of been leasing the property to someone. John R. was the executor of the estate. It is possible that real estate records would be on file at the Recorders Office but I don't think that is really going to tell you much more about the family. There are no records of Huldha Gleason Pettit or Mary Jane Strickland Pettit are not buried in Muscatine County. Where and when have you found them in the Federal and Iowa State Censuses? As to a death record for John R. most likely you are going to have to hire a researcher to get it for you. It is the policy of the Iowa county court system not to do any thing pertaining to genealogical research.
