Description	:	Margaret C. "Maggie" Engelken, 92, of St. Benedict, died Monday, December 12, 1983 at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital. She was admitted to the hospital on November 30. She had always been in good health and this was her first hospitalization. She was born October 30, 1891, at Kent, Minnesota to Peter and Adelaide Cook Andres. She came to Axtell by covered wagon. She grew... Read More	Margaret C. "Maggie" Engelken, 92, of St. Benedict, died Monday, December 12, 1983 at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital. She was admitted to the hospital on November 30. She had always been in good health and this was her first hospitalization. She was born October 30, 1891, at Kent, Minnesota to Peter and Adelaide Cook Andres. Her father had four sons and a daughter by a previous marriage, and two sons and two daughters by Adelaide, Margaret's mother. All of Margaret's brothers and sisters preceded her in death. She came to Axtell by covered wagon. She grew up there and attended country school. When she was 22, she moved to St. Benedict where she worked for the Barney Bergman family. On February 18, 1919, she married Andrew G. Engelken at St. Mary's Church, St. Benedict. They farmed and lived west of St. Benedict with Andrew's parents, the Herman Engelken's, for the first year. the next year they moved to their own farm, west of the family farm. Andrew died August 30, 1974. They had been married 55 years and had celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. After Andrew's death, she stayed with her children part of the time. In October of 1984, she made her home with her daughter, Reva Holthaus of Baileyville. She attended Sacred Heart Church at Baileyville. She was a member of St. Mary's Church, St. Benedict. She was also a member of St. Ann's Altar Society at the church. Survivors include two sons, Lester of Frankfort and Clarence of Seneca; a daughter, Reva Holthaus of Baileyville; 26 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Roy Engelken, on September 10, 1982; a grandson, Edward Engelken on February 22, 1977; and a granddaughter, Kathleen Engelken, on July 23, 1979. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, at St. Mary's Church, St. Benedict, concelebrated by Father Jude Burbach and Father Charles McGlinn. Burial was in the church cemetery.
