In the summer of 1888, when she was fifteen years of age, she moved with her family to Okanogan County, Washington Territory where her parents established a homestead near the mining town of Ruby. One year after they arrived in Okanogan country, she met and married Frederick William "Frank" Brown, the owner of a store in Ruby and sixteen years her senior.
