Description	:	Mrs. Maria Katrina Gassman was born in Fredsberg parish, Westergotland, Sweden, January 21, 1841. She was united in marriage with her now sorrowing husband, S.J. Gassman, December 28, 1863, and they came to America and South Dakota in the spring of 1883. With her husband she moved to a homestead in Charles Mix County, S.D., where she lived until 1894, when the family moved to Union Creek, in Union county, S.D., which remained the family home until 1913, when Mr. and Mrs. Gassman left the farm and came to Akron to live. For several years her health has been... Read More	Mrs. Maria Katrina Gassman was born in Fredsberg parish, Westergotland, Sweden, January 21, 1841. She was united in marriage with her now sorrowing husband, S.J. Gassman, December 28, 1863, and they came to America and South Dakota in the spring of 1883. With her husband she moved to a homestead in Charles Mix County, S.D., where she lived until 1894, when the family moved to Union Creek, in Union county, S.D., which remained the family home until 1913, when Mr. and Mrs. Gassman left the farm and came to Akron to live. For several years her health has been poorly, but she had been able to be about every day until three days before her death. Without any apparent illness, she peacefully slept away in the sleep that knows no awakening on Saturday, March 30, 1918, at 5 p.m., at the ripe age of 77 years, 2 months and 9 days. She was a kind and devoted wife and mother, a helpful neighbor and valued friend and her long life was filled with usefulness and good deeds. Mrs. Gassman is mourned by her aged husband, S.J. Gassman, one son, Henning Gassman, and two daughters, Mrs. L.E. Erickson, of Union Creek, and Sister Albertine Gassman of The Immanuel Deaconess Institute, Omaha, Nebr.; one brother, Peter Shoulberg, of Akron; one sister living in Sweden, and five grandchildren. The remains were taken to the Union Creek Swedish Lutheran church, where funeral services were conducted by Rev. Emil Johnson, pastor of the congregation, assisted by Rev. D.A. Knock, of Akron. Beautiful singing was rendered by the Union Creek choir, Rev. Emil Johnson and Rev. and Mrs. D.A. Knock. Mrs. Gassman was laid to rest in the Union Creek cemetery, by the side of her departed son, Ernest, in the family lot.
