At the time of her death she was 71 years 3 months and 21 days old. She was the daughter of Judson and Drusilla Barker Faw early settlers of Woodford Co. Illinois. She was born at Washburn, Ill. Feb. 1, 1864 (sic. headstone has 1863 for DOB year). Her family was descended from early American pioneers, her grandmother being a niece of Daniel Boone, the great frontiersman and blazer of trails though virgin forests where Indians and wild animals prevailed. The father came west from North Carolina to Linn Twp. of Woodford Co., Ill., in 1850, where he married Drusilla Barker and purchased the present Faw farm at Washburn, Ill.. Marietta was the fourth of five children; others being Caroline Coble of Newton, Kansas, Marvin and Reuben who are both deceased; and Frank Faw of Washburn, Ill.. Marietta was a young lady of 19 when she was married to C. D. M. Rains on June 19, 1882. The new was home was established on one of the Faw farms where they lived for nine years. In Feb. of 1892 they moved to Packwood, Iowa where a new farm was purchased and a new home built in which they resided for seven years. The home farm 5 miles northwest of Fairfield was purchased in 1899 and here the family resided for 20 years. On retiring from the farm the present home on North Morgan was purchased and here she passed away. Her husband preceded her in death on April 13, 1923. A daughter Drusilla, an infant son and a son Deuwaine also preceded their mother in death. The surviving children are Alvy L. Rains and Clara Belle Brock of Fairfield, Ia., Charles of Des Moines, Ia., Elsie C. Pappas of Peoria, Ill., Arthur D. of Des Moines, Ia., Raymond of Keota, Ia., Robert J. and Merritt of Fairfield, Ia., Benjamin of Pekin, Ill., and Florene. of Des Moines, Ia. Besides these there are 28 grandchildren and one great grandchild, a brother, Frank Faw of Washburn, Ill., and a sister, Caroline Coble of Newton, Kansas; and a large number of other relatives and friends who will mourn her passing. Mrs. Rains was a lady loved and esteemed by all who knew her; many will mourn her passing, for as a mother, friend and neighbor she was held in high regard by all. She had not been in good health for the past four months, being taken seriously ill on May 24th. She was patient throughout her illness, never complaining through intense suffering. The funeral was held at the First Christian church of Fairfield on Monday May 27, conducted by the minister, Rev. S. P. Williamson. The body was laid to rest between her husband and son in Evergreen cemetery. At the service the hymns "Abide With Me" and "Beautiful Isle" were sung by Mrs. S. P. Williamson and Mrs. A. C. Johnson. "In The Garden" was sung as a solo by Mrs. Williamson. Pallbearers were W. S. Cromer, W. P. Starr, Jay Craig, O. E. Harken, P. H. Monfort and Ben Hazleton. The funeral arrangements were carried out by the Hoskins Funeral Home.
