Miss Bland, 98, who spent seven decades teaching elementary school, Sunday school or volunteering in her retirement community, died Friday at the Hermitage Methodist Home in Richmond. "There's always a teacher or teachers that you remember," said Darlene Swinson of Richmond, one of Miss Bland's students. "Miss Bland was one of those. She really inspired you as a teacher. The good thing for me was, over the years, I got to know her as a friend, and she inspired you as a person, too." Miss Bland began teaching in Arlington County in about 1930, said her nephew, Dr. Irby B. Brown. She moved to teach at Ettrick and Bellemeade schools in Chesterfield County until 1942, when she began teaching at Highland Park Elementary School. It was at Highland Park, where she taught for 26 years, that she formed many lasting friendships with students such as Swinson. When she was in fifth grade, Swinson said, Miss Bland spent extra time with her to help her through the death of her grandmother. "She inspired you educationally, but she went a step further," Swinson said. Though she retired from her job in 1968, Miss Bland was no less active in her church, teaching Sunday school and singing alto in the church choir. "Whenever her birthday came up, or Christmas or Easter or anything, she would get literally dozens of cards from people in her church who remembered her," Brown said. Miss Bland was also a regular volunteer at her retirement community, paying regular visits to her neighbors. "She really worked well with people of all ages," Brown said. "She was very much a person who loved other people. . . . She had no trouble transferring that kind of love of people to the senior citizens that she was with for the last 30 years of her life at the Hermitage." Brown said Miss Bland's ability to connect with others was one of her strongest traits. "That kind of ministry came naturally to her - visiting people and alleviating people's anxiety," he said. "She could talk to people and help them feel like they were part of something larger." In addition to Brown, Miss Bland's survivors include a niece, Virginia Hutcherson of Culpeper, and another nephew, Dr. Robert A. Brown of Columbia, Md. A funeral will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home.
